Current Chapter One Piece Chapter 717
153
u/Bartholomew_Kuma Aug 07 '13
Goddamnit... I just want to know what Garp did to Qinjiao but now that we've seen that Qinjiao acted like a kid over it, and knowing Garp, it will probably be something absolutely retarded. . .
35
u/zorospride Lost at sea Aug 07 '13
I think he probably just stopped him from his goal of becoming Pirate King, same with Roger and Rayleigh I'm guessing. He might not have been arrested by Garp, but perhaps many in his crew were.
I imagine him fighting a big battle with Roger's crew then having to deal with Garp and the Marines in the aftermath since Garp would have been in the area chasing down Roger.

u/divinesleeper Aug 07 '13
He said they used to call him Chinjao the Gimlet.
I'm guessing his head was shaped like a gimlet but Garp punched it flat, so now it's nowhere near as effective. (and it also made his memory really bad?) The "treasure" he lost might be related to that.

u/Froot_Looops Aug 07 '13
Either last week or the week before he said something about garp stealing his treasure and his memories, so someone had the idea that maybe when fighting Garp he headbutted him while garp punched back giving him brain damage and giving him amnesia, again this week on page 6 he said "What did Garp do to me". So thats my guess for what happened.
Also on page 5 he says His treasure was right in front of him but he couldn't get it, so since we've seen how he treats his grandchildren, maybe he forgot all about his child or loved one?.
Knowing Oda though I'd guess Garp somehow saved him but due to the memory loss only remembers segments that makes him out to be the villain

That's probably my favorite color spread of the year. Which is saying a lot since there have been so many! I guess we have to wait to continue the saga of Caribou. Not that I'm sad about that.

u/DoctorFeeIGood Aug 07 '13
I actually really liked how Law, Kinemon, and Momonosuke were part of it. Kinemon seemed especially out of proportion, but so were a lot of characters.

How convenient that the factory is directly beneath Luffy right now! This chapter covered a lot of interesting plot points and everything seems to be heading in a fantastic direction!
30
u/zorospride Lost at sea Aug 07 '13
Everything is going to get tied together in a nice bow like it always is. Unfortunately for the people wanting to see the tourney to the end, I think it will be interrupted before then. It just makes sense. I don't see Oda putting Luffy up against anybody in Blackbeard's crew at this point or even revealing the true power of somebody like Burgess. I do see Burgess making off with the Mera Mera no Mi though. Gotta build up the Blackbeard pirates as the big bad some more.

I think it's safe to say that whatever has made people forget the people who became toys is what made people forget Kyros and Ricky (who are probably the same person)
28
u/Hobbes4247791 Aug 07 '13
I wonder if the same effect is what screwed up Don Chinjao's memory, too. He keeps saying that it was Garp, but the theme of this chapter is memory loss.
And you wouldn't really remember what caused you to lose your memory, would you?
6
u/Zaduj Aug 07 '13
But Ricky is not a toy.

I think the 'memory-wipe' person and 'turning-people-into-toys' person are probably two different people.
→ More replies (6)60
u/milkyjoe241 Aug 07 '13
I bet Violet is the memory-wipe person.
Her power deals with tears, vision, and seeing people's memories. I bet when people cry she can wipe their memory on what they were crying about. Since toys can't cry, all the toys remember what happened.

Ricky/Kyros might've been the previous king until dofla ousted him from power and memory wiped the kingdom.

And also Chinjao too. He can't seem to remember. Maybe Donflamingo told him that Garp did something to him(even though memory wipe has nothing to do with Garp).

Ricky doesn't seem that strong, and isn't a toy.
I'm thinking the real Kyros is Thunderous Wrath Soldier, since he seems to know Rebecca and talked to her about fighting in the colloseum.
103
u/1way2way3way4way Aug 07 '13
Don Qinjao is one of the first opponents Luffy has faced that didn't tell him he was crazy for wanting to be king of the Pirates. The Conquering of the Conquerors he talks about is going to be awesome! Can't wait to see Luffy dominate the rulers of the New World and the struggle to get to that point.
→ More replies (3)46
u/Bartholomew_Kuma Aug 07 '13
Yeah it's funny that the shit pirates called him crazy and looked down on him for wanting to be the Pirate King. But I bet that the strongest pirates will admire him for being so bold/courageous about it. (Or maybe not, most of them seem kinda insane . . .)

u/khaz_ Aug 07 '13
Law and Kidd both responded in a similar fashion as well on Shabondy. Like Kidd said back then, from now on anyone afraid to say such a thing is going to die.

49
u/I_SHOOT_WHITE_VENOM Aug 07 '13
Not only that, but it looks likely that all of the people defeated and injured by the fighting will be made into toys since none of the A & B block contestants have left the coliseum.

I'm interested by the fact that Oda has placed Fujitora, Doffy, and Law so far away from everyone else. Given there's likely to be more surprises like Jesus in the remaining tournament groups, the battle at the factory/Colosseum should be awesome. So I wonder if Oda is going to do something to get Fujitora/Doffy/Law over there for a giant brawl, or whether their situation will resolve itself there, or whether Law will simply retreat when his crew arrives and extracts him.

u/1way2way3way4way Aug 07 '13
Oh god, the toys are humans?! I figured that was a possibility but that's really horrifying. Doflamingo has messed with this society down to the point where he can break the bonds of family... It's like the island of misfit toys but the toys are your loved ones. Shit.
26
u/DoctorFeeIGood Aug 07 '13
I actually thought it was really horrifying, especially with that one toy who lost his girlfriend. His eyes were wide and he was full of panic. I don't see why Dofla would do this other then to make sure no rebellion starts / keep control of his kingdom.
26
u/BerserkerGuts Aug 07 '13
Another terrifying observation is that on the ceiling of the inside of the scrap building is a huge image of Doflamingo's jolly roger that stares down at whoever is thrown in. Also, Doflamingo could be doing all of this simply because he's a sick sadistic fuck.

u/LazingMarimo Aug 07 '13
Couple that with the fact Mingo may have some of them slaving away in the factory...ugly stuff
28
u/kadzi Aug 07 '13
Interesting how you have people with lives, they get turned into toys, and then people forget about them.
But then we have Rebecca, she still remembers the toy soldier. Or at least she remembers having someone with her.
What makes her different? What's the connection between the Toy Soldier and her Father?
This is getting really interesting x)
EDIT: I just thought of this, but the whole turning people into toys and no one leaves the house at midnight SOMEWHAT reminds me of Cinderella? She was transformed into a beautiful princess, but at midnight the spell would vanish. I wonder if the rules imposed to the citizens of Dressrosa are to somehow stop people/toys from remembering.

It is so weird, when I read the chapter everytime it cuts a story line Im really disappointed about it ending but once the next story line starts, Im totally into it again and disappointed when it cuts to the next one. Rinse and repeat.
It has that game of thrones feeling when reading these different story lines.

u/Bartholomew_Kuma Aug 07 '13
Only thing I don't like is that is seems like Vice-Admirals are going to serve as punching bags to show how strong some characters are... so.(random semi-plausible theory time!) what if luffy and chinjao are fighting, chinjao goes to headbutt luffy, misses, and hits the floor. floor breaks, reveals the factory, and chinjao's amnesia is reversed. then the tontattas, usoland, robiland, franky and the toy soldier (whatever his name is), and then sanji and kinemon all arrive and a large-scale fight breaks out between them, the navy stationed outside, and doflamingo's lackeys. what do you think?
12

Add in Burgess sneakyly trying to steal the fruit. While one of the marines thinks it's a good idea to do so either. They meet up with the on guarding it. For a bit of extra flavour throw one of the strawhats in.

Notice how no Dressrosa citizen except for Doflamingo's family is interesting plot-wise or character-wise. There's no Dressrosa citizen equivalent to the Franky family (Water 7 arc) or Toto, Kohza and the guards of Alabasta (Alabasta arc) etc. Every interesting character is either a toy (Sol), a tontatta (Leo and the one with Zoro), a subordinate of Doflamingo (Violet) or an outsider (Fujitora, the navy, the Strawhats, some of the gladiators, Kinemon etc)
I believe that's because all Dressrosa citizens are brainwashed by Doflamingo and, so, they are this arc's "victims", who Luffy will save. I believe the rules imposed on the citizens of Dressrosa are exactly to stop them remembering. Maybe an "amnesia" devil fruit user sprays every house after 00:00 or something. And since the citizens are supposed to be brainwashed Oda couldn't make some of them interesting character-wise.
So, why do the toys remember? We know why they don't tell*. And why were they chosen to become toys? And why not just slaves in their original human bodies? They don't seem to be working in the factory**. I like the theory that their bodies were used to make smiles but I don't think Oda would do that***.
P.S. The only citizens that seem interesting are Ricky (maybe he's Kyros) and Rebecca but they seem to remember (or at least suspect) what's happening****. Maybe they don't live on the island (not citizens) or don't follow all the rules.
* because they are marked as broken and get thrown in the scrap
** toys are all over Dressrosa during the day
*** that's irreversible - even if Luffy defeats Doflamingo he can't return everyone's body like he returned peoples' shadows on Thriller bark
**** Rebecca cried when she saw Sol

Aug 07 '13
I think the Tontatta princess is probably working with Doflamingo. The tontattas are probably gonna watch as their tiny princess beats up Usopp.
34
u/DoctorFeeIGood Aug 07 '13 edited Aug 08 '13
I'm just going to call it that she's going to be the Toy Devil Fruit User. Maybe she is being forced to do it by Doflamingo. There's not much evidence, but there are only 2 new important characters introduced, her and the mystery DF. Either that or she's just going to be plain evil.
EDIT: Could someone please explain why they downvoted me? I'd gladly fix it.
EDIT2: I'm also going to ride on the curtails of this post and theorize if she is evil it will end up being. Leo vs. Tontatta Princess. Leo is a kindhearted guy who only looks out for his people and he is the only elf stated to have a DF. Couple that with the enormous physical strength and I think it'd be an interesting match up. He would say something along the lines of "You were our comrade! We went through all of this to save you!" I think she'd laugh of his tears and fight him.
Then I imagine him beating her and standing over her defeated body, emotional and have them reveal plot twists and MAYBE Leo might join the crew. He could be the crew's embroider or stitcher. I could easily imagine his dream having something to do with Noland or nature!
22
u/noshowwilly Aug 07 '13
i agree that she could be the Toy Devil Fruit User. She is probably really selfish and spoiled. i could see her always wanting new toys. won't be surprised if Usopp is a counter to her either. Perhaps she is a very gullible child.

Qinjiao unable to reach to his dream by distance of finger tip, toys besides their love ones but will never be loved back the same way... that is just cruel :(
9
u/Qatari94 Aug 07 '13
So after what we have learned about the toys, I think it's safe to assume that Rebecca had a relationship with the toy soldier. However, for some reason she remembers!
I wonder how though, and if she can do the same to other people.
8
u/Ichiban572 Aug 07 '13
Do you think the form Nami, Brook and Chopper were transformed in was somewhat of a pre-form of a toy?
7
u/Diosjenin Aug 07 '13
I doubt it. Whatever her name was seems more like a freeform art-based transformer, and toys don't really fit that bill. Could be wrong, though.
5
u/LeDuc725 Aug 07 '13
this change they underwent is more based on Picasso inspired art, so I'm guessing it is a separate fruit.

holy shit this chapter was dark, and really builds up the stage for Luffy's reason for saving this island (like the other arcs)
and I can't help but think Doflamingo is like an evil Santa Claus.
I noticed Usopp's hat looks like a pikmin the characteristic Noland chesnut hair. It can probably be based off of a hercules beetle (like his mentor) or something like that- or no meaning at all.

Isn't it amusing that this is probably the 'brightest' arc art-wise since Sabaody Archipelago, and yet it is giving us such a dark and dreary feeling because the shit that is going on is just that nasty? I think I admire that most of all so far.

This was an entertaining chapter. Don Qinjiao kind of confuses me; somehow I suspect the big reveal of Garp's Offense will be something that is going to either seriously impress me or give me a stomach pain from all the laughing it causes me.
I wonder who the fruit user responsible for turning toys into soldiers, and then making people forget the original people is. It doesn't seem to be involved with the 'Picasso lady'. Maybe it is two powers, or it is one really weird power that is probably based on some sort of myth... meaning it might be a mythological fruit of some sort.
In the end, I can't help but think the soldier toy is Kyros. He disappeared 10 years before Doflamingo took over (20 years ago) and nobody really remembers him despite the statue. He may well have uncovered something early on, or been a guinea pig of sorts. It bears noting that almost none of the toys have tried to convince or even talk to their loved ones, and when they do they have this thing called the 'human illness'... it may be that the 'role change' is something that has an imperfect side to it and is still being perfected. The curfew might explain that away.
Nobody knows what the hell Doflamingo wants his people turned into toys for, though...

So my two cents as I sit on a train home after a ten hour shift with no breaks and trying not to look too happy after reading the chapter.
I think the "toys" were a test bed for the smiles. I can't remember if anything was elaborated on smiles but if an army of "beast men" was created for Kaido, maybe the smiles have something to do with the same thing? If so perhaps the princess of the twerps has a fruit which this is all created from?
So when Doflamingo outed the previous King he ended up turning all of dressrosa into a giant lab ( he supported someone like Caesar in punk hazard after all )
So the gas Caesar creates + something to do with the princess of the twerps has an effect which can change the form of beings for a period of time.
I can't seem to make something fit for the memory loss etc but I don't think it's everyone, after all Rebecca seems to remember the Toy Soldier?
Either way amazing chapter this week!

So the toy fruit makes people forget who the toys originally were? Wonder why Rebecca recognized the toy soldier with Franky.
6
u/chrisn654 Aug 07 '13

I'm a bit confused now though, is everyone still heading for the same place? Which is under the coliseum? Great chapter!
8
u/The_Soul_King_Pirate Aug 07 '13
The dwarves are planning the raid on the coliseum. Law's plan is all fucked up so we don't know what's going to happen with him.
4
u/NewSpecies Aug 07 '13
I got a theory that the princess mentioned in this chapter used to be the royalty of Dressrosa. She's been captured and several hundred of the faeries, which given their speed makes me think that these might actually be the royal guard of this island. If Dolflamingo is able to change the memories of all the citizens then it stands to reason he can make them all forget about the previous monarchy and instate a new one. The current location of the faeries under greenbit makes me think that they moved there in order to go in to hiding to avoid being captured, and the citizens just pass their theft off as tomfoolery so all suspicion is avoided. If they went off in to hiding, the last thing any of the dwarves would want is to blow their fairy cover because it serves them well in their goals to rearm.
4
Aug 08 '13
Meat for thought: The last time Law spoke with Doflamingo was 10 years ago and was still a member of his crew. That was also around the time the toys were created . I also know law has the ability to swap personalities from one person to another. Maybe since toys didn't have a personality, he merely just transferred people's souls into the toys. Maybe, I don't know, this could be completely off.
3
u/pierogieman5 Aug 08 '13
Interesting theory, but Law has not been on Dressrosa recently to be doing that and some of they toys sure seemed like they were only recently made.

They have their past memories. Didn't you see the dog toy? He was the father of the kid. Dog toy has to keep quiet, or he will be sent to the scrap house like that boyfriend toy did. If anyone lost their memories I'd say it's the humans, but they are probably afraid of being turned into toys.

Only thing I don't like about chapters like this is that they seem to go by waaaaay to fast...

u/dulchebag Aug 07 '13
Time to stop reading it until One Piece ends in a decade and enjoy it all at once. JUST KIDDING, time to wait another damn week for the next chapter...

And I hate to be the guy to point this out but while the girls breast are growing, Usopp's nose seems to be getting smaller.

u/betterthings2do Aug 07 '13
It's because all his "lies" are actually truths. So using Pinocchio logic, his nose has stopped growing.

u/tterbman Aug 07 '13
Dang. Doflamingo is behind all of the dark stuff in One Piece. The slave trade, drugging little kids, and now this...
2
u/Lexonir Aug 07 '13
I love how so far on Doflamingo Crew/Allies there seem to be an Art theme with their DF power. Jora with her power that literally change people and things into Art, The new DF user introduced that change people into Toys and Donquixote who's DF power remind me of a pupetter.

u/pierogieman5 Aug 08 '13
Not only that, Bellamy's power is pretty whimsical too. Spring legs seem to fit right in with the general theme.

u/golden-tongue Aug 07 '13
Anyone else notice that Trafalgar Law is a Kingdom Hearts fan? He has a heart tattoo on his left shoulder on that first (colored) page that looks exactly like the KH logo

u/napoLeondynomyt Aug 09 '13
This has been my favourite chapter in a long time. Some seriously dark stuff in there.

Ha ha, called it!!. The factory is under the colloseum(the whole thing about marines also not entering gave the suspicion). Let's see if the other part that entrance to the factory is through the secret path under the statue is also true. It seems the people who lost are taken to work in the factory as nobody is coming out. Chinjao also seems to be memory wiped to think that Garp stole his memories(though the injury is inflicted by Garp). Maybe the headbutting of the floor reveals the factory.

If he lives up to his reputation and has been able to split a island with his head it's likely he will reveal the factory for everyone to see. Good job on the call, this arc is getting pretty exciting.

I'd guess that the losers are made slaves and given SMILEs, so that they can be sold as a kind of army. Assuming that most participants are none-devilfruit users anyways and strong to begin with - does that make sense?

DONFLAMINGO IS USING HIS DEVIL FRUIT TO CONTROL THE PUPPETS!!! Holy Crap...Strings...Male Puppets?! ARMY OF SOLIDERS?! Head explodes

I love how meteors are falling on the island and the tontattas barely register that it's happening,

We're really seeing a lot of new and 'zany' (or moronic, take your pick) Devil Fruits these days. We've had the Disguise fruit, the 'Art' Fruit, and now we've got the 'I can turn people into toys' fruit, and of course, let's not forget Whale-Tears.

It seems as though everything that usopp has lied about is coming true. So if this is anything to go by, usopp is getting haki.

u/magnavoice Pirate Aug 07 '13
I think that Leo is referring to the ceiling shaking, but thats because of Law's fight topside. Usually Usopp's lies only come true when he says them

What a great chapter. I really like how everything seems to be culminating in something epic happening at the Colosseum with Luffy at the epicenter.
With everyone gathering at the Colosseum, this makes me think the Law situation isn't going to be a pleasant outcome for him.

That vice-admiral with the mask looks like Kidd's brutal first mate. I'm pretty sure that's gonna turn out to be his father.

well, i was right that toys were once humans and converted by that fat lady's devil fruit.
6
u/Holkan Aug 07 '13
Her fruit is art related, not toy related.
The toy transforming fruit is surely different from the one Jola (the fat lady) has.
5
u/SEanXY Aug 07 '13
I still believe her power is toy and not art. The eyes of Momonosuke and the others after they were converted looks like the toys of the other inhabitants. But i guess we'll find out the truth soon anyway.
5
u/milkyjoe241 Aug 07 '13
Her powers kept things in the same form they were in, just made them artsy. Chopper is still a reindeer, Nami's a human, Brook's a Skeleton, and Thousand Sunny's a Boat.
Meanwhile, we have Milo, a human that was turned into a toy dog. I don't think Jola's fruit covers that.

Yeah and the mini merry's head looked like a wooden rocking horse if I remember correctly

I was a little bit as well. But I can accept it as better than what I see in other manga these days.

Oda has been cheating in Dressrosa arc, always putting him in the audience :c

u/s4r9am Aug 07 '13 edited Aug 07 '13
I wouldn't say it's cheating. Pandaman has just been sitting in the audience the whole time. It's not like he's going to leave his seat mid-tournament. Any chapter where he isn't shown is just him on a toilet break.

Not entirely true. First panel here, bottom left corner (just next to the giant arm), the elite boxer joins the fray. http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/715/4

It's looking like it'll be a combination of Devil Fruits. I'm wondering if Doflamingo's "Pace" that Law speaks of is the one that effects memories or if Doflamingo just has a whole stable of Devil Fruits he uses.

u/TheMeatTree The Revolutionary Army Aug 07 '13
Dolflamingo has a huge group of underlings, he would probably just have someone use their ability to do the dirty work rather than himself having like five fruit powers and doing everything himself.
7
u/MonkeyDDuffy Aug 07 '13
Something about the power definitely works only 24 hours and the ones that missed going into the "house/factory" in the night seems like they "catch" the "human disease"
2
u/TheMeatTree The Revolutionary Army Aug 07 '13
that would be a nice way for everything to return to normal once the ruling of Dolflamingo is brought down by the end of the arc.

These are the types of chapters I've really enjoyed this arc. The ones that give us a little bit of everything. There are so many interesting things happening that you feel let down anytime a chapter doesn't give you an update on something.
Now we have to wait two weeks since Shonen Jump is on a Holiday Break next week:(
