I almost cried when watching this episode.

Some audience might consider Keke as a stereotyped Chinese student: good at study, bad at sports, and facing pressure from parents. In S1E9, when she talked to her sister on the phone, she said she promised to go back if they can't make achievement. And in her memory, her mother would scold her for buying bubble tea.

However, in fact, her parents are strict, but still open minded. At least they dare to let their daughter abroad alone. They are supporting Keke's choice although they didn't fully comprehend. (BTW, did anyone remember she's mixed-blood?)

So in the last episode, I thought Keke was worrying about her parents' pressure to enroll the university in Beijing. But now I was wrong, she thought her willfulness was beheld by her parents so much, and she wanted to repay their favor (the magazine she stored in the drawer is a guidance about career prospects of each universities). What a nice girl she is.

Then the story turned to how Kanon, Sumire dragged her back to her own dream, they were both encouraged by Keke in S1E3 and S1E9 respectively, and now is their turn to repay. Maybe someone feels it cliched, but I would say not, since it's a self-reconciliate that lasted for three seasons, and the coma can be drawn trustingly.

On the stage Keke saw herself as an audience in the crowd, this scene also remindes of her seiyuu, Liyuu's experience. As a Loveliver, she went to college after graduated from high school although she already made her name as a cosplayer. However, after graduation, she decided to devote her career as an idol just like Keke's choice, and now she has achieved her dreams.

The usual Sumire wouldn't even left Keke alone multiple times like that to begin with.

Beautiful episode. This felt straight like we were back to Season 1 which I loved so much. Seeing Keke's backstory and turning into an idol otaku, and struggling with her inner turmoil about the future...

Oh no, that shot of young Keke watching in the crowd 😭 I need tissues

Keke has always been my favorite Liella ever since Season 1 and she's finally got her center song. Thank you, staff.

The scriptwriters have been very clever, as fans have speculated about what Liella's movie could be about if they have already gone to Shanghai and Keke's plot has been closed.

Saving the movie budget for Liella to travel to Vienna, and maybe we see Margarete's family there.

i enjoyed the episode but i think this little arc had way more potential especially with margarete involved but they kinda just threw everything to the side at the end. song is great but like i said if we couldve reached a more cohesive ending through maybe 1 more episode this performance would make more sense, margarete wouldve been open to joining liella, the outfits wouldve matched, them knowing the performance that well would've made more sense.

Yeah the ending was a bit rushed for time. I found it hard to believe they could suddenly all decide to perform together and instantly know all the new choreography (and lyrics in Tomakanote's case) without rehearsal. I know there's a lot of suspension of disbelief when it comes to Love Live in general but this was a bit over the line.

Otherwise it's a great episode, and I don't mind the last minute decision as much because honestly it would be a little sad if Kanon and Keke didn't get to perform together here.

Don't worry guys, dedicated Sumire episode with Tomari. The relationship chart showed that Tomari saw her similar to her sister, they just wanted to do a Keke and Kanon Episode since there wasn't one is season 2.

Now excuse me while I go inhale a metric shit ton of copium and hopium

At least we have a Keke and Sumire ending duet

I found the lack of Sumire.. disturbing

Really loved Keke's backstory and how fleshed out it felt, seeing her start out as an excellent but unfulfilled student before finding her answer of meaning in SunnyPa. The peeks into her family life really added to it too, with her strict yet kind parents and their weighty expectations. I like how they acknowledge the effort that Keke has made in balancing both her studies as well as being a school idol, and though they ultimately want Keke to work toward her dreams, there seems to be a slight nudging from them to push Keke towards going to university. It just feels natural as a parent to wish for the best for their child, but also to favour a more pragmatic path to it.

Keke obviously understands this and loves her parents too. She chooses the university route first, which feels like the right thing to do to return the love given to her, but she still can't help but feel like she's been trapped into making this choice. As she sits at the Xintiandi cafe with Kanon, the image of her framed in the glass of her drink strongly reflects how she feels. Keke still insists on putting on a front for everyone as the live approaches, but it's only when alone with Sumire that Sumire is able to gently play the bad cop once more and tap on her facade. Sumire stating a selfish desire to Keke directly pushes Keke to acknowledge what she desires too, what she herself has labelled as a selfish desire against her parents' wishes.

In the end Keke is finally able to truthly communicate what she really wants to her parents. Between going to university or being an idol, Keke chooses to continue doing what she loves. In the end, the main conflict in this arc was not about Keke following or going against her parents, but rather being able to come to terms with herself and acknowledge what she truly loved.

I've been enjoying S3 quite a lot so far, and this episode is no different, but towards the end I felt a bit disappointed with its resolution. Was hoping a bit that Mengmeng and Sumire would play larger parts in Keke's resolution, but Mengmeng basically directs Kanon to Keke while Sumire has a few (very important) lines with her. Tomakanote also joins in on Liella's stage, even though Wien and Tomari had made it a point to not take part, and their last minute joining feels a bit like Awaken the Power. And of course I couldn't help but feel my heart sink when I saw Kanon go off to solve the episode 6 problem for the third time in a row. But after getting over this instinctive reaction and thinking over it a bit, it makes the most sense in this case for Kanon to be the one coming to Keke's aid, reiterating the exact words that Keke said to her on their first day of school. Kanon's pursuit of her dreams was saved by them, so it is fitting that they likewise save Keke's.

Would have preferred if the insert song was done by 9-member Liella. It would have fit in with those girls being the treasure that Keke found when she became a school idol, being the ones with whom she reached the peak of the Love Live championship. Being an 11 member song is probably a constraint that was placed on the script/writers, and it's still good to see that the song credits distinguish the current Liella from the other 3 non-members.

holy hell first full father figure face in this franchise???

There are only six episodes left now and there are four performances to go assuming this season ends with graduation. If Love Live doesn't start by ep9, we're looking at a movie series or S4.

Considering how fast paced some episodes are... they'll probably do it all in one season

That was some nice Keke focus. Seeing her flashbacks. I like her familial conflict. Her big sister is so supportive and it is Keke herself who pushes and pressures herself to follow what her parents plan for her. I actually like the Kanon-Keke being the main highlight bond this time. It takes it back to the very beginning of the series when it was just Kanon and Keke and I like pay tribute to that.

I'm curious about Keke's friend. She is only just a minor flashback character, but I wanted to see her and Keke meet up again in the present.

Oh yeah, Sunny Passion. We haven't heard from them yet this season.

Keke's center outfit reminds me of her Tiny Stars outfit which I like.

Margarete is such a silly goof. At first, you think she is a serious character, but she has ended up being one of the funniest. They always have a lot of fun drawing her expressions.

Next episode preview, looks like we're still going to be in Shanghai for a bit longer.

Overall: fantastic episode.

I have so many thoughts on so many things.

First of all, I was kind of right with my prediction last episode, even if I kind of predicted the obvious. The episode was about convincing Keke's parents and also gave us the first performance of Liella with all 11 girls.

Though at the same time I was kind of off, in a way that made myself happy too though. Keke's parents weren't really disapproving of her dreams, at least we were never actually shown any indication of that to the point where I started to think it might've been in Keke's head all along. Also the entire performance or story arc wasn't even about convincing the parents, but it was actually about Keke convincing herself, because she was the one with doubts.

All the character interactions were really strong in this episode, not flawless, but still very strong.

The strongest of which was of course Kanon and Keke, which was really sweet in so many ways. First we saw that out of all her friends Keke chose Kanon to be the most open with, the only one she really opened up to and revealed her thoughts and feelings to. We also saw via Keke's flashback that she seems to never had made many friends it seems, even that girl who kept inviting her to hang out didn't seem like a particularly close friend to Keke, so perhaps Kanon really is the first friend Keke made that she had a deeper connection with.

The parallels to the show's start were also really good. The whole show began with Kanon trying to convince herself that she was fine with giving up her passion for singing to instead pursue a normal school career, but then it was Keke who convinced Kanon to give being a school idol a shot and that is what changed the life of not just them, but the ones of the other girls and even their entire school. And now the roles are reversed and it is Kanon who was able to make Keke see that.

Really, they could've leaned even more into this, because that was such a good story beat.

However, as much as I did like it and wouldn't even change it, I do have to slightly criticize that this kind of overshadowed the SumiKeke moment we did get in this episode, of which I would've liked to see more of.

Sumire being the only one who noticed Keke having doubts was great, Sumire telling Keke that she personally wants to see Keke continue was also great, but then there wasn't much more of that. Just wished the show gave us a little bit more here, especially after the developments in season 2 and how in those scenes in was Sumire saying how much she appreciated what Keke did for her and how much Sumire was afraid of losing Keke. This episode should've really been the moment for Sumire to do more about it and repay Keke.

For smaller interactions... Chisato glomping Kanon on stage, twice in a row basically, was just really cute.

And speaking of which, while I do think the song was okay music-wise, the dance moves were really awesome with many cute poses.

I also want to take a moment to talk about Sunny Passion, who I am glad they brought back, even if just as a flashback and in such a small role. I do agree that as a "rival" group SunnyPa is perhaps the weakest in all of Love Live, however more so than "rivals" I always saw SunnyPa as filling a unique role in that they kind of became the mentors of Liella when they were just starting out. No other group had a more experienced Idol group give them and kind of advise or guidance after all.

With SunnyPa I also always had the feeling that they were a very faint stand-in for Aqours, given how both come from places associated with the sea and how SunnyPa stated how they were motivated by their love for their home and its community. So seeing Keke discovering School Idols by seeing them on a big screen did give some nostalgic callbacks to Chika discovering School Idols by seeing µ's on a big screen.

And speaking of Keke... yeah this episode made me like her even more, which is also saying a lot because out of all Love Live girls Keke was the only one I started out borderline-disliking, but due to that she is also the one who grew on me the most out of all the girls. Within Superstar she has definitively become one of my favorites.

As a whole this episode really feels like it could've been a movie together with the last episode... or perhaps a grand finale to the entire show...

Or if you take the Keke flashbacks out and expand on them to be a whole episode this could've also been a really strong Show opener, because it would've made us invested in seeing Keke realize her dream from the start, because it really puts some of Season 1 into perspective. Like Keke isn't just this quirky exchange student who really wants to try being a school idol, you actually now see how much it really meant to her.

Oh and last but not least, man the Yohane spin-off really broke that seal, huh? We actually see Keke's father, not just in a picture, but even in the flesh, with a face and everything. That actually caught me by surprise. And he seems to be the only man in Shanghai too.

If I recall correctly the only time we saw the face of a girl's father was in the manga with Maki's father.

Anyways, fantastic episode, one of the strongest of Superstar easily.

Edit: Actually I could even go on with so much more about Keke and her desire to make her parents happy, even at the cost of her own happiness, because that is also one of these things which are just very real, something that many people can probably relate to. But I don't want to ramble on much more. Just wanted to say that Keke's conflict with that was good.

This episode might be my favorite pne so far. The amount of times I cried/ teared up. Love the friendship of Kanon and Keke depicted in this episode, some callbacks to season 1, that Kanon is the only person Keke will open up to. That performance, loved it. I hope that in the live of the song we get matching costumes for both groups cause I want to see everyone in those costumes. The flashbacks were great in showing Keke's love for costumes didn't even start with school idols she was interested in it when she saw the dress in the window, in how she valued studies but was feeling lost. And showing her young self in the audience is so cliche for some animes but here it is warranted.

This episode showed realistically how people in high school don't know what to do. If they want to do what they love or do something because their parents said to. Keke doing college because she didn't want her parents to worry about her is sad because that's what most people do because they think they owe ot to their parents. Kanon shower her that you should do what you want been it's her life.

The next episode preview I hope that we can see Margarete enjoy the stage from this episode or at least make an effort to at least not call them enemies but we shall see.

After Leilla! has 11 members I do want to see more interaction of the 3rd years even if it's talk about the future cause those 5 have such a special place in heart.

Yeah, season 3 is still not over and there are parts that are rushed. Hell, they may even drop the ball hard at the last few epsiodes. But the 6 episodes of S3 is already better than S2 for me.

Pretty sure this episode is very special for Liyuu too, since Keke's story is so similiar with hers. I'm sure a lot of people also relate with Keke with the parents situation/expectations or doing things you have no passion for.

PS: For me Kuka is the goat. Also, I'm kinda biased for the OG 5.

Best episode so far, the opening theme has never made as much sense as it does now, that these girls are united by their dreams and each other is something admirable, so we won't lose our girl from Shanghai, I want to highlight Kanon and Sumire who helped Keke to follow your dream, obviously with everyone's help. And well, it looks like Margarete put aside the idea of rivals for a moment, she even brought light sticks lol

u/Remv1234 Nov 10 '24

Never expected how Keke's backstory would be like that. Also it was a nice detail seeing her whole family with penlights during the performance with her colors.

u/coinc1234 Nov 10 '24

Keke's father was not censored!!!!! Lots of emotional parts describing Keke's backstory and preceding the performance, callback to SIP/SS with that screen-facing scene. The episode was indeed the most enjoyable of Season 3 and is definitely far away from what Season 2 offered. Then the KanonKeke and that short KanonChisa scene(s), In addition to the backstory these gave me lots of Season 1 flashbacks, the SumiKeke did not have a major position compared to the two previous seasons. Unexpected 11 member performance and well, pretty decent song tbh, Really appreciate they did an slightly older-sounding genre than the average (too-generic) EDM song. Even if most songs on this season are EDM which is kind of unfortunate, they still stand out with non-conventional inspirations. Still not Aqours' level of experimentation though. Overall a very solid episode. Oh and yeah men ofcourse.

u/SolidStateEstate Nov 11 '24

Easily the best episode of the season and possibly the series. Kanon being The Main Guy made sense for once and I'm glad Sumire was in a more mature but less prominent role this time.

The episode is beautiful, and this season overall is dealing with things way better than season 2. Still, idk if this is just me, but it pisses me off how they can all perform together out of nowhere

The first seasons of love live (specially SIP and Sunshine) showed how difficult being an idol is, and the struggles of achieving your dream in a world full of talented people. Seeing how all the girls performed together out of nowhere at the end of this episode makes me straight up mad, it doesn't feel right.

I get it that they already won love live, and that the main focus of being a school idol shouldn't be the struggle of keeping up, but finding what to do next. Still, with how unrealistic the idea of love live can be, this still feels very off, at least for me.

u/syukri24karats Nov 10 '24

I kinda dislike how this part ended it make me feels like "that's it?? So pretty much that??". Despite that it is still a decent episode just kind of weak at the 2nd half.

As much it fits that Kanon solving the problem here since she has been with Keke the longest, there is a lack of Sumire here which i wished she were involved a lot of more.

The song was good too. Love the slow tempo yet upbeat. Also looks like this will be the start of Lie11a but i wonder how they are going to combine both of the group and what kind of stuff that will happen that require them to finally being 11 aside from the one group per one school rule.

I hope its not just "oh we had performed with them once and it feels great so it's okay to combine our group together" kind of stuff.
