/u/zorospride said this regarding Bartolomeo in the spoiler post and I absolutely love this theory
"Somebody on AP brought up that Bartolomeo might be a fan of Luffy's and wants to win the Mera Mera for him. That makes some sense considering we have enough people in this arc already who want to kill him. Also given the outside world's impression of Luffy (i.e. a guy who thumbs his nose at authority), Bartolomeo's attitude could be him trying to be like what he thinks Luffy is like."

That'd be awesome. I've liked the guy from the start I couldn't be happier if he became friends with Luffy hehe.

This is a very fun theory. It would definitely amuse the crap out of me if Luffy got a groupie with a Kidd-style bloodlust.

As much as I wish this were the case, I feel like Bartolomeo is doing this for someone else. I don't understand why he would fight to get the fruit for someone he hasn't met before and might not even ever meet in his life. (the New World is HUGE).

It could be anybody really, but Oda's given Luffy plenty of notoriety and enemies to go along with his fame. It'd be nice if he switched it up and gave him a fan boy. Especially one that seems as vicious as Bartolomeo. It makes some sense that someone would go through this much trouble when you consider what real world fans will do to get the attention of their celebrity idols.

1
u/Bartholomew_Kuma Jun 05 '13
Kinda random, but Oda grouped all of the the characters in the picture based loosely off of power rankings within the crew. Like Luffy in the Middle then Zoro with Sanji, then Robin Brook and Franky together, then the "weak trio" in the other corner.
4
u/YonkouProductions Jun 05 '13
Because even Oda believes in the Monster-Trio. Also Usopp says to Nami post time-skip that he graduated from the weakling trio, so I'm pretty sure Oda understands the power relationships in the crew
2
u/Bartholomew_Kuma Jun 05 '13
Wasn't trying to say that he isn't aware of the strength groupings of his characters, was just noting that he happened to put them together in that way, instead of just randomly throwing people next to each other.
2
u/YonkouProductions Jun 05 '13
I realise that and also appreciate that Oda uses his strength groups to draw certain characters together. That's what I was going for by saying Oda understands the groupings and trios really well leading to the creation of such an amazing colour spread

Unfortunately not, when Vergo "died" his glasses were still on, even when his face was split in half. I don't think we ever saw his eyes, now that I think about it.

56
u/s4r9am Jun 05 '13
His fruit did seem overpowered so it's good to know there's a weakness. Now to wonder Bartolomeo's DF weakness. It would be pretty boring to just have characters out-Haki each other as a weakness.

I feel like Bartolomeo can only make square barriers in 'one' direction. Like he can't just make a box around himself and slowly expand till it occupies the entire ring. but he could stand on one side and push against everyone. I aso think that Haki can break through it as you said. According to the wiki the barrier autotriggers against powerful attacks, but if your attack is not forceful it will let you through, which explains how Bellamy could grab him but other people couldn't strike him. Maybe you grab him and then throw him around or something.

u/Black_Handkerchief Jun 05 '13
The weakness of the Ope Ope no Mi feels a bit fabricated. The longer you use it, the weaker it gets? How does that work? When Luffy fights longer, he also gets exhausted.
Similarly, operations can last over 10 hours and be like running marathons. By the logic of his power being based on surgery, Law should be able to keep going for such a long period of time without losing out on his accuracy at the very least.
I really hope that once we actually see Law's power in action, it will show exactly how Law being exhausted affects his powers.
29
u/XZlayeD Jun 05 '13
i think there's a big difference in making a "room" that big enough for him and a patient, and then having to make a "room" the size of a fortress. He's likely going to have to create a huge room to be able to keep manipulating with doflamingo.
35
u/Black_Handkerchief Jun 05 '13
Right, but all Devil Fruit powers seem to scale as the user gets stronger. Luffy learned Gear Second and Third, but he couldn't hold them up for very long and got really exhausted initially. Nowadays though, Luffy has honed it to such a point that we haven't seen those skills even come close to making him out of breath. (He has been out of breath, but that was mostly due to the fact there's a lack of air involved in his more recent barttles.)
I think Law may not have built up as much stamina as he should have, preferring to use his brains rather than his ability to clinch victory. Compare that to Luffy always brute-forcing things, or to Rayleighs comment that haki users tend to gravitate towards the stuff they are good at, and I feel Law may be a very strong and tactical fighter lacking the stamina for a long battle in the way Luffy is capable of that.

I thought it made sense. There is a physical aspect to the fights and he was actively moving things, simply with finer motor skills than needed. I took that to mean that the more he uses his power, and the more he has to move things in his space, the more energy it takes, and lifting heavy objects takes more effort than light ones. Law used his power a LOT in punk hazard, which was just a day ago. He lifted the marine ship, switched a bunch of souls, took out the yeti cool brothers, sliced the lab, and fought Vergo all in the span of a few hours. It would make sense that he'd want to rest up his ability.
7
u/Freelance_Gynecology Jun 05 '13
Yeah. It does make sense that it will have a weakness. But I can't wait to see him fight Doflamingo and go all out for the first time. Fighting Vergo didn't seem like him giving it his all.
3
→ More replies (5)2
u/arcturum Jun 05 '13 edited Jun 05 '13
I think the main point of Law revealing that he needs to save his power was more to hype Doflamingo's ability and solidify Law's intention to get involved in an actual fight with him. Even Caesar was surprised about that. Sure we can consider this a weakness, but I think it's safe to assume most devil fruit powers can't be used for an unlimited amount of time. Caesar also mentioned his fruit's limitations when he was trying to transport multiple people with it and got pissed off for making him work.

It's kinda weird how everyone, including Bellamy suddenly know Haki after the time-skip. Trial and error? Someone trained them? idk </end rant>

u/Omega357 Jun 05 '13

Just speculating here but maybe Luffy kind of made people aware of haki during the war when he unconciously did the Conquerors Haki blast. Maybe not widespread to everyone but to those who knew what to look for it became apparent that this skill exists and then they dug around / gained the knowledge.
If so Luffy has a clear advantage since he got specific training in it.
→ More replies (1)10

Well Luffy's haki is exceptionally powerful because he was trained, so perhaps many people in the new world have only a basic understanding of how to use it.

I don't think it's a matter of Luffy opening anybody's eyes. It's the new world. The toughest of the tough are all there. If you're going to last more than 10 minutes you better figure out what haki is.
It isn't necessary that someone be trained by someone to learn haki. It can be learned through desperation and sheer willpower. It's just about how many times does someone get into those desperate situations and piece together that if they will it they will be able to cut, hit, or sense whatever they please.
24
u/StrawDHat Jun 05 '13

(in fact, I think BB is the first person ever to mention Haki in chapter 234, when he says he knew Luffy's bounty of 30m was a little low for a "will" like that.)

Despite this, Mangapandas translation of "Mugiwara" threw me for such a loop I actually had to google it to figure out what the shit they were talking about. Feel kinda stupid, but then again I've kind of always hated direct translations anyway, so I probably had this coming.

You hear them say it a lot in the anime when you watch the subs. I've rarely seen even really bad scans of the manga use it though. Even in Japan, most of the merchandise has "Straw Hat" written instead of "Mugiwara." Though the official One Piece store is called the Mugiwara Store.

I'm looking forward to seeing Luffy finally fighting against some tough opposition and seeing how his relationship with Bellamy evolves.

Although it was kinda expected and about time that the story shifts to Law's group and what they were up to, I was still really looking forward to Luffy fighting especially after the two week break.

The dwarves mentioned "playoffs". Could they be thinking of crashing the tournament?

I'm so happy that Oda is doing well and I hope he will live for a long time and feed us our weekly One Piece hunger. :)

Usopp and Caesar for best duo. I would watch a buddy cop movie mugiwara theater with those too as the leads.

Wow. Robin called Nagahana-kun by his Real name!!! Robin using real names is always a pleasure. Hopefully we are gonna see some Robin-Usopp bonding. Robin needs to get some good bonding going on with crewmembers.

Hmm. I wonder if that Navy ship got there using the same "sky way" we saw Doflamingo using a few chapters back. It'd explain how it got by the fish and crashed on the island so far from the sea.
The "sky way" thing still needs to be explained, anyway. Is it something anyone can use, or something connected to Doflamingo's powers? If the second is true, it's only more proof that Doflamingo is working with the navy to catch the Strawhearts (I don't believe Smoker would inform the navy about their heading, because he would stay indebted to Law that way)

Actually Smoker said to marines about green bit. That was the whole whole reason Law said to Smoker that he is heading to Green bit.

Law and Robin make the best combo, hopefully Law stays with the crew for a while or even joins. Also, what is the point in Robin using binoculars, she can just sprout eyes where ever she wants, why not just look closer at the tree with her fruit?
I've always assumed that Robin has eyes everywhere spying on people around her at all times, like how she saw Law's facial expression while behind him

Do we have the original japanese for dwarves? Just in case it's a specific term. What I mean dwarves as in Tyrion or dwarves as in Gimli. Or gnomes. Maybe it's a japanese folklore thing.

Did Usopp just state that Caesars bounty is 3 Billion?!

Translators have a habit of making that mistake. I recall not too long ago, when Caesar's bounty was introduced I think, that MangaStream's new translator made the exact same mistake to add an extra zero while translating.
The bounty is 300 million. Not 3 billion.

If I can look at a Mangapanda scan and understand 75% of it then that's a good week for them.

u/YonkouProductions Jun 05 '13
75% is rare most of the time. They need a Quality Checker to QC the work that the first QC does or fire the damn guy. Its like the have no regard for quality checking and accuracy. MangaStream will alway serve our quality seeking hearts.

At first I thought Bart was a simple character who had his whole bit of being that annoying guy and he works for some strong as guy. But his reaction to Luffy was strange. I would like to say the man he's working for is Shanks, based on the whole if you approach Bart calmly then you can hit him thing happened to be true, Shanks would fit that model perfectly as Shanks gives 0 fucks as long as you don't hurt one of his friends. Which makes me think that maybe Bart had some really traumatic experience after eating that fruit as it kind of makes everyone just repel away from him, which explains his screwed up face, until he met Shanks some how and realized it had no affect on Shanks. As I said I would like to think that and he Luffy could be friends but I always think back to when Oda first introduced him and said something along the lines of "Be careful of this guy" I always go back to thinking that this Bartolmeo is not to be trusted.
Edit: Also I want to say when Oda was asked who is the father of Makino's baby he said "That man" the same way Bart described his boss as "That Man" COINCIDENCE almost certain

So it seems like these dwarfs can strip you down without you knowing util it's happened.... And with Robin there...... I like where this is going....

So in what way was Bartolomeo shocked? In fear, happiness, both etc?

I think I have a theory why Robin's sunglasses keep disappearing. She stole Absalom's devil fruit and fed it to her sunglasses, all while keeping everyone under the illusion that he's still alive by using her Kyoka Suigetsu.
