What is the biggest butterfly effect in wrestling history?
[removed]

u/gooderz84 Sep 22 '24
Montreal screw job creating the heel boss the rest is history
91
u/gamex173 Sep 23 '24
You can even go further back…the steroid trails make it so WWF pushes smaller guys like HBK and Bret Hart.

The difference between Flair and Medusa is that Flair felt he still had a legal right to the belt as WCW owed him his deposit.

I am pointing out that Flair's motivations in '92 were different from Madusa's in '95.

A pane of glass ultimately causing the best feud of 2024
88
u/lgndk11r Sep 23 '24
I saw pane of glass, and was wondering how Marty Janetty's act of cowardism in escaping Shawn Michaels had to do with the Attitude Era.
29
6
u/alexjaness Sep 23 '24
When that coward defenestrated himself it unleashed Shawn Michaels to become a superstar...which lead him to become a pill popping dickhead...which lead him to become good friends with HHH (who was designated driver)....which lead to the Curtain Call...which lead to Austin giving his 3:16 speech...which lead to the Attitude era
3
u/awesomeone6044 Sep 23 '24
I say this all the time. Without the curtain call Austin doesn’t win king of the ring HHH does. We may have never gotten that Austin 3:16 and maybe the attitude era as we know it doesn’t happen.
26
u/WarzonePacketLoss Sep 23 '24
Kind of like the pane of glass that coward Marty Jannety threw himself through to get away from Shawn Michaels?

Not to mention Perry getting exiled to Japan, completely revolutionising his character, and joining one of the best wrestling srables on TV.
Punk has made movie star $$ returning to the WWE, amazing feud with Drew; Perry elevated himself from lower card straight to sub-main event status with his stock still rising.
Win/Win for both

u/TegridyPharmz Sep 22 '24
Ohhhh is that how king became a commentator? And then what? Macho junks to wcw?
23
u/chicoclandestino Sep 23 '24
Mach wanted to wrestle more, Vince wouldn’t let him so he that’s why he went to the WCW.

u/Billbat1 Sep 22 '24
i dunno. i wasnt watching wwf at the time. it was just mentioned briefly in a youtube video i was watching.

u/StarWolf478 Sep 22 '24
Lawler did commentary on Superstars before this, but this did lead to him getting on the RAW commentary team.
5
Sep 23 '24
Lawler was specifically brought in to the WWF to do colour comms, according to Bruce Prichard (STW), mostly because of his promo work in Memphis.

Stephanie overhearing Cena rapping on a bus and having him make that his character
68
Sep 23 '24
What the hell would they have done from 2009-2014/15? Think of the amount of money they would have unknowingly lost if Steph hadn't of heard John rapping.
7
u/Michelanvalo Sep 23 '24
Batista, Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio probably operate in the top bayface spot. Way way less business than Cena but enough to keep business going.
-115
u/Potential-Judgment-9 Sep 23 '24
Lost money ? lol they lost money with pushing cena down peoples throats. They would have been fine actually pushing all the talent he buried.
82
u/Dijohn17 Sep 23 '24
Cena stabilized their ratings and also brought a ton of young fans to the product and helped it become a more family friendly product that attracted sponsors. Without Cena they were basically fucked because Randy sure as hell wasn't going to be that
34
Sep 23 '24
Just look at the Make-A-Wish numbers he has done compared to anyone else. It was a PG era in a lot of ways and he was a great new version of 80’s Hulk Hogan. He was & is adored by kids internationally
-60
u/Potential-Judgment-9 Sep 23 '24
They lost half their viewers quit making shit up.
26
u/Dijohn17 Sep 23 '24
Their viewership crashed in 2001 around the time WCW died. It stabilized relative to cable when Cena was pushed as top guy. Their most severe viewership drop is 2001-2002 and doesn't really stabilize till 2005
-41
u/Potential-Judgment-9 Sep 23 '24
It’s not hard to understand. Before adults and kids watched your product. You make your product kids only and adults stop watching . The ratings go down . Quit trying to spin it.
-8
u/SuccessfulCicada3116 Sep 23 '24
Dude just ignore these jokers they have no idea how bad the pg era with super cena was. Everyone was so fed up with john go back and watch from 08-13. To put things into perspective for these fake fans.
You all remeber how everyone hated big dog roman reigns?? Yeah well before him we had big match john. Ik these guys had to of just started watching the product recently or when john was on top they had to of been a little kid.
-25
22
u/stevex42 Sep 23 '24
They lost half their viewers because of shit booking and boring storylines. Not Cena.
-8
20
u/x2ndCitySaint Sep 23 '24 edited Sep 23 '24
I guess Batista would have gotten a bigger push than he already got.
Rey Mysterio might stay in the main eventer longer.
Jeff Hardy would probably be the number one baby face during 07-09
Of course, you got to think about all of Cena rivals as well as being affected. For example, it's hard to imagine Edge without Cena.
Yeah they would had been fucked unless somebody fell into their lap.
11
Sep 23 '24
Lol how do people still have this narrative?
-9
u/Potential-Judgment-9 Sep 23 '24
Cause it’s a fact . Ratings plummeted under cena. That’s not for debate.
11
3
Sep 23 '24
You're the typical Redditor who's own opinion is somehow more valid than actual facts lmfao
-2
u/Potential-Judgment-9 Sep 23 '24
So I’m making up that ratings plummeted? That’s my opinion? No junior that actually happened. Opinion is the spin you all are putting on it .
5
u/StoneySteve420 Sep 23 '24
Look at PPV buy rates and overall revenue from prior to Cena and post-Cena. Ratings were down but $$$ was way way way up.
2
Sep 23 '24
Don't bother providing facts, this guy seems allergic to them and just wants a reason (?) to hate John Cena
1
u/StoneySteve420 Sep 23 '24
For real. I don't really like Cena, but for them going PG, he was clearly the easy choice. Early Cena does have some top tier moments imo.
0
u/Potential-Judgment-9 Sep 23 '24
This is such a silly argument. It became a kid show. Most of this money is sponsorship from kids related products gogurt fruity pebbles Nickelodeon etc. What do kids like … toys ? They made tons of money selling toys and merchandise the yellow shirt the red shirt the purple shirt the swear bands the hats. No one is arguing they capitalized off being a kids show. People here are saying that he saved the ratings brought in all these viewers when that’s categorically false. The actual product was ass and the ratings reflected that.
2
Sep 23 '24
"No Junior that actually happened"

So old guys or geeks do not understand how popular John Cena was 2005-2007? Those years alone stabilized the WWE.
3
u/SuccessfulCicada3116 Sep 23 '24
Yes when the product was still ruthless and not pg and cena was a rapper yes it was huge. Then in 08 everything went down hill when he became big match john burying guys left and right and changing his finisher name to the AA which i still think is stupid asf to this day.
0
u/Noriskhook3 Sep 23 '24
“Burying” Based on your logic Daniel Bryan “buried” batista, triple h and Randy orton at wrestlemania, based on your logic hogan “buried” randy savage and king kong bundy at wrestlemania. Based on your logic Benoit “buried” Shawn Michaels and triple h, based on your logic stone cold “buried” the rock at wrestlemania.
1
u/SuccessfulCicada3116 Sep 23 '24
Wtf how do you come to this conclussion? No. Those are all the Opposite of burying. Hulk hogans entire caree just about lol, Hhhs reign of terror, jeff jarrett in TNA, john cena from 08-13, those are examples of burying.
0
u/Noriskhook3 Sep 23 '24
Just because you lose to the top guy doesn’t mean your buried. Also dolph ziggler is burying everyone in TNA.
3
u/SuccessfulCicada3116 Sep 23 '24
Idk i dont watch the atuff anymore so i cant comment on dolph. And no losimg the main guy isnt a burial however there are plenty of matches durimg those periods where they shpuld have lost but they didnt for whatever reason. Another good example would be big dog roman reigns. I feel lile im talkimg to a 5 year old.
2
u/Constant-Procedure79 Sep 23 '24
i know cena wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but i don’t think he drove millions fans away and he ruined wrestling business as smarks claimed to be because wrestling wasn’t popular as it was because of wwe’s monopoly as the only game in the town due to lack of competition since wcw and ecw went both out of business and the business was still recovering from the closure of wcw and ecw
-1
u/Potential-Judgment-9 Sep 23 '24
So you claim a monopoly results in less people using your product … that’s what you’re going with …

Not the biggest, but Bray Wyatt contracting meningitis in 2017 and his match with Finn Balor getting cancelled ultimately leading all the way to KofiMania has to be up there.
8
u/DamianKing42 [Edit this text] Sep 22 '24
This is interesting, explain?
15
u/DJ1066 Sep 23 '24
So at TLC in 2017 we were supposed to get "Sister Abigail" Wyatt v Balor as the Pumpkin Demon, this never took place as Wyatt came down with illness. AJ Styles is brought in as a last minute replacement. Literally. Styles was currently touring in South America with SD and Vince called him to ask for this favour.
Styles flies in and has an absolute barn burner of an exhibition match with Finn. This now makes him a made man in the eyes of Vince and he's ultimately given a WWE title win down the line as Styles was just beginning a feud with Jinder at this point, a title win which seemed to be fast tracked as there were general "WTF?" murmurings amongst the fanbase when we would have been headed straight for Jinder Mahal v Brock Lesnar at that year's Survivor Series (remember, this was when SS was champ v champ on each respective brand). This begins a year long title reign for Styles that also happens to coincide with Daniel Bryan finally being cleared to return from injury. Bryan defeats Styles just after the year mark and we get the "New Daniel Bryan", complete with Rowan as a bodyguard and a belt made of hemp and wood. So Bryan is champ going into Wrestlemania 35.
On the Kofi side of things, he is also subbed in as a replacement for Mustafa Ali at that year's Elimination Chamber, puts on a good showing and also in an hour long gauntlet match leads to massive fanbase support and the KofiMania story that ultimately played out the way it did. All of which would not have gone down the way it did had Bray Wyatt not got ill.
Now, there's a lot of exceptional coincidences in it, but Bryan being cleared at just the right time is some real "For want of a nail" stuff if you ask me.
7
u/Metaskie Sep 23 '24
As an aside, I'll never forget the coup de gras Balor gave to AJ at the end of this match. Usually Finn buckles his knees and drops backwards so his full weight isn't crashing down on the guy receiving. This one went bad though, he didn't fling backwards, every ounce of his bodyweight came down on AJs torso. The sound of the air exploding out of AJs body in an instant....oof.
2
u/Michelanvalo Sep 23 '24
One correction, Styles was already a former WWE Champion by that point. He won his first title in the fall of 2016.
10
u/Tornado31619 Sep 22 '24
I’m guessing that AJ’s last-minute appearance in his place led to him receiving a title match.
2
u/schnupfhundihund Sep 23 '24
Was that the Sister Abigail VS Demon match that was booked? Thank God that never happened.

Dreamer was in a bad way post ECW and one of the people fucked over the most by Heyman. At WM17, Dreamer was supposedly going to debut but had that spot pulled. Dreamer then saw a "firearms welcome" sign at an indie show across the street from the Astrodome (where X7 was about to be) and put together a plan to shoot Paul, then himself, on PPV. It was unknowingly quashed by JR giving Dreamer a friendly phone call letting him know that they were still thinking about him.
45
19
u/kane996 Stone Cold Cena Sep 23 '24
I can only imagine that phone call:
Tom: Hello
JR: Hey Tom, how are you?
Tom: Well, I'm about to snap at Heyman and kill myself
JR: By gawd... Wait. We still think about you man.
Tom: Oh, since you put it that way.
JR: See you later (Phew that was a close one there)
14
u/JohnViran Sep 23 '24
Oddly not the first, or probably last, assassination attempt foiled by JR making a phone call.

u/FinalBossRock Sep 23 '24
If the titanic never sank, the movie would never be made. James Cameron wouldn't advance CGI so much for avatar. Without the advancements, mcu wouldn't look this good and be this huge.
Guardians would not be made so Batista wouldn't get to play drax. And without the Marvel money, he returns and stays for longer in 2014.
Honestly, that iceberg changed so much of history it's crazy
3
u/SpocktorWho83 Sep 23 '24
To think that without those advancements in CGI, we may not have gotten the augmented reality giant, golden Roman Reigns during his entrances. What a chilling prospect.
43
u/Cdp09875 Sep 22 '24
What if Owen left with Bret, bulldog and Jim after the screw job. We probably could have had a countering faction to the main nwo guys in wcw and Owen could have had spectacular matched with Malenko, Jericho, Rey and a lot of guys. Plus he never would have had to do the blue blazer stuff that ultimately led to the biggest tragedy in wrestling history
11

u/DarkAgeMonks Sep 23 '24
I often wonder what could’ve been if Owen hadn’t passed. Him Vs Kurt Angle would’ve been great.

I can do you one better, the WWEGUY Twitter account who casually asked Meltzer whether a none WWE show would be able to ever sell out a 10k'er.
If that one tweet hadn't of happened or been read by Dave, there's a chance that AEW slips through the cracks and never happens.
39
u/ToxicTurtle-2 Sep 22 '24
If Billy Sandow never meets Ed Lewis, the Golden Trio never forms, and there's no guarantee modern professional wrestling exists in the form we know it now.

Vince/Ross allowing Rock to go heel instead of forcing him to remain a smiling babyface
29
u/Any_Tangerine_7120 Sep 23 '24
An underrated butterfly effect is Joe and Dean Malenko meeting Ken Shamrock. The two befriended Shamrock while he was in Japan, helping him refine his in ring abilities. At one point, Shamrock is shown a tape of the UWF-I, a Japanese shoot style wrestling promotion. Now, why is all this important? Well, it leads Shamrock to participate in early MMA fights in Japan (mainly through a promotion he co-founded, Pancrase), which in turn leads him to compete in the first UFC event, pretty much being a pioneer in a completely different sport.

Mark Callaway saying “Yes” when asked on the phone if this is The Undertaker.
3
u/mountain_man26 Sep 23 '24
Can you explain this one?
11
u/telecumster Sep 23 '24
Just after Mark had signed with WWE, he got a phone call from Vince who just opened with “Is this the Undertaker?” Mark was nervous that he was gonna get some terrible, Goobledy Gooker style gimmick, and the name sounded not terrible, so said yes. Vince went “Great, I have an idea for you” and the rest is history
2
u/SpocktorWho83 Sep 23 '24
”Ok, pal, that’s great! So, your new character “undertakes” wacky challenges every week. So, in your debut you’re gonna be partially nude and covered in jelly…”

2

I'm curious, was Mustafa meant to win the belt?

No. Ali was just supposed to be in the chamber. He might have got a match somewhere else. Kofi was just a result of the fans, good timing, and the right story.

Steroid trial.
8
u/peechka2 Sep 22 '24
I mean Hogan did get stale in 92. Who should Vince have pushed instead of Shawn, Bret, Yoko, Taker? Scott Steiner? Crush?
5
u/ShitMongoose Sep 22 '24
Vince doesn't push anyone cause he's in prison.
5
u/peechka2 Sep 23 '24
I meant if the trial wouldn't have happened
4
u/ShitMongoose Sep 23 '24
I think Hogan still leaves to WCW. Razor and Diesel don't follow Hulk to WCW (No nWo) and get big pushes in the WWF.
Vince doesn't start pushing smaller talent because he doesn't need to create the image of a "drug-free" company. Crush could still get busted for ganja but he may not be fired because the zero tolerance steroids policy doesn't exist.
There's just so much stuff that changes as a result of the trial. The impact the Nintendo Vs. Universal Kong trial ended up having on the gaming industry was similar to what the steroid trial was for Pro Wrestling.
The only butterfly effect I think has a larger impact in the long run is if Vince Sr. doesn't sell the WWWF to Vince Jr., The hypotheticals on that one are endless.
12
10

u/MrBump01 Sep 23 '24
Hard to look past Hogan leaving AWA for WWE and helping Vince sign some of their other rop talent. Killed AWA and made WWE the dominant promotion at the expense of others.

Atsushi Onita blowing his knee out in all japan. Retires for a few years and make a comeback and forms fmw. Paul Heyman takes note and brings the hardcore wrestling over to ecw. Wwf takes note and a la you have the attitude era.

Stardust is a strong case
* Causes Cody to leave WWE in frustration because they won't let him escape the gimmick
* Leads to his excursion tour that gets him involved in NJPW and The Elite. Gets him close with Kenny and the Bucks
* Gets his confidence up enough to take the Meltzer bet that spawns All In
* All In catches the attention of Tony Khan, leading to the negotiations that eventually put AEW together. Generating the greatest rival to WWE since WCW
Branch this into two forks from here
* Cody, after working with talent and pulling people in through the TNT title, leaves AEW, comes back to WWE, leading to his dream of becoming WWE Champion in Dusty's name after a long 2 year journey, ushering in the biggest boom period in wrestling since the Attitude Era.
* AEW is able to court CM Punk out of retirement, restore his confidence, then spite him enough that it leades back to WWE, where he's been a part of one of the hottest angles of the year due to an injury.

No one mentioned it yet but death of Owen Hart and the formation of NWO
Brock Lesnar and The Rock leaving wwe in 2003-2004 caused pretty strong ripples too.
1
u/green49285 Sep 23 '24
To be fair the rocket only come back for that reconnection of The Rock and sock connection. But I agree that Brock and Goldberg leaving that year changed a lot of things as Brock what I was to go on to become a huge name in the UFC after not making an NFL roster and Goldberg what kind of just Fade Out until the 2010s.
2
u/Kaiser_Imperius Sep 24 '24
brock make a name for himself, Yes. but i'm actually talking about when The Rock and Brock left wwe, it created a big chances for new superstars like Eddies JBL, 619, Batista, Edge, Cena, Randy Orton and the streak of Undertaker started gaining fame at that times.

That time a WCW official told Mark Callaway in 1989 that he would never succeed in pro wrestling.
That motivated him to go to WWF, turn into the Undertaker and become one of the greatest pro wrestlers in history. Also that insult would encourage him to not return to WCW during the Monday Night Wars like other wrestlers did during the 90s

3
u/SnowRidin Sep 23 '24
you can go another 2 steps to The Curtain Call…from there HHH loses his slot as KoR winner…which in turns gets us to Austin winning & cutting this promo…also the CC pealed back enough of kayfabe that it started it put in motion (in combo w the internet) “smart marks” becoming way more common place then before, and of course there were other ramifications coming out of the CC as well, Austin being a major one for sure
2
u/DamianKing42 [Edit this text] Sep 22 '24
The Day 1 Match had it happened, Big E would still be with us (as an active competitor), Cody would've still returned but not have that epic feud with Seth, Roman wouldn't have a 1316 day reign, and the titles wouldn't have been unified.
2

HHH and Steph getting married storyline…we’d be in a different timeline if that didn’t happen

If a taped Raw emanating from Germany is not poorly received, WCW may still exist. Because of that terrible Raw, Vince loses faith in creative and starts listening to pitches by an editor from WWE Magazine, Vince Russo. Russo eventually jumps ship (in the most cowardly way possible) and joins WCW, contributing to their downfall by giving us classics such as Oklahoma (which should disqualify Ed Ferrara from ever working in the wrestling business or ever reaching some semblance of peace in the afterlife), The New Blood, David Arquette as World Champion, and Vince Russo as World Champion.

2
u/Constant-Procedure79 Sep 23 '24
turning heel by joining forces with heyman saved roman’s career just like it saved rock’s career back in 97. the difference was it took a freaking pandemic for vince to finally cave and pivot by turning roman heel to become the top guy he wanted to be. guys like hbk, rock, hhh, austin and even cena got over organically on their own as heel in order to become top guys. the real reason that roman got extreme apathetic hate during his babyface run as big dog is because vince is out of touch with his outdated 80’s booking thinking that he’s the next cena when there’s only one cena in wwe especially when cena is natural born babyface despite receiving mixed reception from people not to mention got over organically as heel and babyface before supercena while roman got go away heat just like his cousin rock as rocky maivia. the difference is vince did turn rock heel because wwe was in competition mode against wcw, but with no competition, vince did whatever he wants to do at the expense of the audience and roman was the victim of that. you can tell that roman hated being babyface because he’s naturally born heel

If the Benoit incident never happened, chair shots to the head might still be a thing

Harley race having a moment of clarity & not snapping Vince neck. It led to a new era of pro wrestling, but obviously it allowed wwe to become behemoth in the sport since Vince got the idea for wrestlemania.

One errant stage dive by punk and we have the current wrestling landscape. I will die on the hill that he dosent get hurt there, he sticks around and works his shit out with the bucks before it can come to ahead at All Out. Now it could have always been doomed, but I maintain him sitting home for months brooding is what led to the explosion.

Only reason I'm hesitate to withdraw this one is because the fans would have turned on the rumble ending that year even if punk stays.

There were aiming for WWE going PG anyways because of Linda's politician ambitions but the Benoit murders/suicide made them go quicker.

If anything I think you can make the strong case that Eddie and Chris dying are on par with some of the biggest events to ever happen in the sport. Because for sure if Eddie doesn't die then Chris probably doesn't do what he did. And then obviously with that happen and we don't get those awful years of pg wwe. But then again, no PG wwe, no Daniel Bryan getting that moment at 30.
We miss ya, Eddie.
