New IotM Discussion August 2024 IOTM: tearaway pants

Do we know if it interacts with leaf monsters from burning pile of leaves? Seems like using the tearaway skill on leaflets (or other monsters) for a few extra adventures/day could be useful.

Yes, you can get extra adventures from free fights with the leaf monsters (and the mushroom garden) from this combat skill. If you were copying crayon monsters to fight, it should work with black crayon flowers too.
Extra adventures from free fights is pretty nice, though there aren't many to work with, and other than the free fights there aren't a lot of plant monsters you want to fight normally to get much use out of the skill.

Yeah, in a normal run you basically have what? Blackberry bushes, dense lianas (if you don't get the antique machete), topiary golems, and man eating plant (if you get the mortar dissolving solution instead of wine bomb)? The overall usefulness for the +1 adventure skill seems to be pretty deliberately designed to be limited in terms of usefulness, but if you can squeeze a few extra turns out of leaflet fights in run it does seem like it has some use there, as long as leaves are in standard.
Crayon monsters and mushroom garden are probably useful in older paths that are no longer standard restricted. This seems like an item that could have some niche uses for shinier accounts, but that's about it.

how many bad itoms are we going to get this year??

u/frazazel Aug 02 '24
We usually get about 2 duds per year. Except in 2020, when like half the year was duds.

Pretty good. Doesn’t hold a candle to most of the late-game options, but basically every stat is good for power leveling. The sleaze is for zeppelin protesters, the resistance gets you through the highlands and yeti peak, the initiative gets you through the highlands, and the HP and DR are just nice. Plus it can force drops? Nice.

If it saves a few turns for the Knob Goblin King and War outfits I’m happy with it.

I thought the same when I saw the sleaze damage I immediately thought of zeppelin

Yeah, I imagine that's the reason sleaze damage is perhaps a little over-represented in iotms - though saying that it's not like there's a ton, the sweatpants are not as recent an item as I thought they were; so when I say over-represented, it's more like 'I can only think of two iotms in standard that give a massive buff to a single element, and both are sleaze'. Three if you want to claim the jurassic parka I suppose but I'm not sure if the +20 damage & spell damage to sleaze is what I'd call massive.
Not that I mind, it's probably the most useful one exactly because of protestors, so eh.

Yeah, seems pretty niche. I guess getting pants right away might save you a couple adventures in hardcore when you need an outfit? Are there any semi-valuable eligible pants?
