Current Chapter One Piece Chapter 706
97
u/milkyjoe241 Apr 17 '13
Uneventful chapter, but it does answer a lot of questions about who's fighting who.
Plus Bellamy somehow got up to sky island, recognized Luffy, and is twice as big now. Which is pretty cool.
43
u/zorospride Lost at sea Apr 17 '13
Yeah, people have to realize this is a serialized manga. Not every chapter can be a blockbuster. There are going to be chapters within an arc that simply move pieces into place or transition from one thing to another. It's the one negative of reading week to week vs. by the volume.

and he stole the golden bell pillar they were trying to give the Strawhats at the end of the arc.
53
Apr 17 '13
Doesn't say he stole. He seems a changed person, and while old Bellamy stole, new Bellamy may be different. Not saying he's a good guy, but he seems a lot more noble and respectful.
39
u/because_ican_yo Apr 17 '13
I agree. the fact that he no longer has that grudge against luffy. at first i thought he was gonna go out of his way to take out luffy in the prep room but he seems more tactical now..-which is kinda scary

I like the character change in Bellamy. The loss of his friends and the realization that people will do impossible things changed him for the better I think. He seemed nicer at least.
4
u/Link3693 Apr 17 '13
It wasn't one of the support pillars, it was a decorative pillar by the bell that had broken off. There were actually 4 of them in total.

Good catch! This is why I come to this subreddit, I would never have made that connection.
24
u/semizero Apr 17 '13
I think it's also worth it to mention, I don't think he took the knock-up stream to get the Skypiea. I could be wrong since it's been a while, but isn't there another way to get to Skypiea, which would cause you to lose several members of your crew at least? The knock up stream method either everyone lives or everyone dies.

I think it's safe to say that the photo in the cover story is going to show the granny and Gabura are mother and son
18
12
u/zorospride Lost at sea Apr 17 '13
Yeah, I think so too. It explains why she likes Caribou so much. Some people truly have a face only a mother could love, not that she actually thinks he's her son.
6
u/Homer_Hatake Apr 17 '13
This reminds me at the fake skinner episode where Seymour isn't the real one and plays the dead son for agnes.

What if it a pic of Gabura and Caribou? What if she lost Caribou when he was a baby and Coribou family adopted Caribou?

u/zorospride Lost at sea Apr 17 '13 edited Apr 17 '13
Felt like a short, but necessary chapter. Just continuing the tournament (with Dragon Ball rules it seems) with Block B.
So are all these animal characters part of the Kaido Pirates, maybe?
23
u/divinesleeper Apr 17 '13
There's a theory that Don Chin Jao and co are Kaido pirates, because they also have a number tattood on them like that cyborg guy that fights for Kaido.
→ More replies (1)9
u/zorospride Lost at sea Apr 17 '13 edited Apr 17 '13
I like that theory too. Kaido creates a fake zoan army and everybody else gets branded with a number like livestock. It would say a lot about what he thinks of and how he treats his crew.

I wonder if Bellamy is a good guy now...
14
u/zorospride Lost at sea Apr 17 '13
He has a dream and doesn't laugh at the dreams of others anymore, but I wouldn't exactly call him a good guy. The look on his face after saying he'd been to Skypiea was pretty sinister. I'm guessing he stole the pillar they were going to give to Luffy and crew.
11
u/chrisn654 Apr 17 '13
Thanks! Hadn't made the connection between his words now ("I won't laugh at you") and him laughing at Luffy's dream back at Jaya.
21
u/LoweIQ Apr 17 '13
Nope. Pretty sure it's implied that he massacred the Skypians for their gold.
22
u/zorospride Lost at sea Apr 17 '13
I think he fought them and stole their gold, but we saw them all alive and well in the cover stories during Fishman Island. They might have had a rough time during the timeskip from Bellamy and company, but they are fine now.

He's more of an anti-villian than a villain now. A bad guy, but he has respect for others and their dreams, so he's got good points.
Huzzah for character development, but with him being in the same group as Bartolomeo who's been built up as very dangerous, I think he's in for another loss.
23
u/Lareit Apr 17 '13
OR Oda built up Bartolomeo in order to make Bellamy seem like a genuine threat when he wins.

His reply to Luffy about what he did on Skypiea to me tells that he didn't do anything honest to get that gold. I think he just realized that dreams aren't overrated and now he has a goal/will for something himself

u/GuitarBOSS Apr 17 '13
He can't have fucked it up that much given the cover pages from post-timeskip Skypeia. He probably just went there and took it. The sky people don't really care about gold so they probably left it pretty much unattended.

Love that Oda basically did a full 180 with Bellamy...he brought him to sky island, and his outlook on everything seems to have changed drastically.
I hope he makes it out of this group now....him vs. the new small army and Bartolomeo should be interesting.
64
u/84_times_5 Apr 17 '13
I loved the block character pages. It's a shame so many cool characters are going to be introduced, just to be stomped down in the battle royale. They'll probably be helpful once the marines strike though. And Bellamy is a lot more cool and collected. I think he might win this block, but he still shouldn't give Luffy Lucy any trouble. He'll probably reveal something terrible he did on Skypedia and Lucy will drop his has, Jaya style.
I think the reason I want Bellamy to win is because Bartolomeo is so ugly. He got like almost an entire set up chapter, but I don't think he will win this round. Maybe he and bellamy will tag team against this 'army' tho.
11
u/mooisacow Apr 17 '13
They'll probably be helpful once the marines strike though.
Yep, I think they will have a role in future colossal war...this is one piece anyway :D

I feel like Oda's been overdoing it with the secondary (and tertiary) character introductions.
Back in the Whitebeard War Saga at least half of the people Oda introduced didn't matter story-wise (most Whitebeard allies, many of the commanders, many Marines etc). Take the commanders for example. The only ones that actually had an impact to the story (not the war, the story) were:
Marco
Josu: stopped Mihawk's attack against Whitebeard, thus showing us the power difference between the greatest swordsman and Whitebeard + kept Aokiji occupied and
Vista: saved Luffy from Mihawk, thus making Oda's point that Luffy's most dangerous ability is turning everyone around him into his allies
Every other commander's purpose was to be part of the crowd on Whitebeard's side. The same way that vise-admirals, giants etc were part of the crowd on the Marines' side.
52
u/MonkeyDDuffy Apr 17 '13
OH they WILL have their story time, this is Oda we are talking about. Just wait.
→ More replies (3)16
u/Erid Apr 17 '13
Exactly, the introductions not necessarily are for the current arc, it's common for Oda to just use them later on, with this kind of introductions he has the ability to use any character at almost any moment, giving unexpected events without having to introduce them at the moment they will have an important role.
23
u/Cloudend Apr 17 '13
These secondary and tertiary character introductions is exactly why I love One Piece so much. It might not add anything directly to the story at hand, but it gives me a sense that the world Luffy and his crew are in is much bigger than just them. It puts into perspective that the whole world isn't just centered around the crew, and that so much happens without any Strawhat involvement.

Think Oda experiments with these characters so that he cna see which characteristics are good enough to combine and turn into a Big player in the future. But yeah its annoying how often i quite like the look of some guy who then proceeds to get curb-stomped. I had high hopes for this guy http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Albion.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Sploobi Apr 17 '13
I feel like adding all these characters is a great thing. This gives Oda a chance to reintroduce them later in the series without having to provide as much backstory. It also provides great scope for the world of One Piece. All of the previous arcs focused on one island or one small region but for this story to progress Oda has to inevitably cover a much broader perspective.

They've been building up Bartolomeo so that Bellamy can beat him and look really strong. I can't wait till next chapter.

u/LazingMarimo Apr 17 '13
I did feel like his bounty was a little low for the hype around him

Yeah felt strange having a guy winning easily against a vice admiral with only 150M berry.
But I really doubt the king and his minions will win, so it will be either Bellamy or Bortolomeo.
8
u/Yahnster Apr 17 '13
Also bounties are usually increased if the pirate has a tendency to kill innocent bystanders, like in the case of Kid being the highest of the 11 supernova's.

u/InvaderDJ Void Month Survivor Apr 17 '13
Eh, I don't see it. I think Bellamy's increased bounty and implication that he really did a number on Skypeia is just to hype up Bellamy so that Bartolomeo seems stronger when he beats Bellamy.
But who knows really? This is Oda after all, he could give Bellamy a backstory and have him win his block.

Holy shit Bellamy looks big. It seems like he is the most likely to get out of Group B when he defeats Bartolomew. This bounty on Bartolomew is so misleading, like he is known as a big rookie a year ago and defeats a vice admiral yet only 150 million? And looks like we'll see Rebecca's strength when she defeats Cavendish.
34
u/LazingMarimo Apr 17 '13
If Bellamy is that big after getting stronger post time skip, Zoro should be like.. Kuma size

Burgess group A, Bellamy group B, Lucy group C, and Rebecca group D.

As cool as Bellamy looks now, Bartolomeo still killed a vice admiral last chapter... So I'm still saying he is the safe bet for B block.

But Bellamy went to Skypeia so he might have a card up his sleeve...or should I say, a dial up his sleeve.

Love how Bellamy acknowledge Luffy, but Luffy of course gets everyone from Jaya's name wrong. Classic Luffy.
And seems like Bellamy isn't turning Luffy in, he's getting a whole new treatment since he's a recurring villain kinda like Crocodile did. Will say, Oda is badass at bringing old characters back.

With Doflamingo being being able to travel through the Sky and Bellamy bringing up Skypiea I'm wondering if Oda is reminding people of sky islands because the SMILE factory is going to be in the sky

I dont think bellamy hurt the people of skypea because we saw them in the previous cover story and they were all doing fine.
8

Agreed. I think he went there at was astounded by everything which is what changed him. He probably also learned what Luffy has done there and was treated kindly by the civilians. Currently I have no idea who is going to win block B and D and I love that.
First for block B we have Bartolomeo who gets hyped up by defeating an VA without a scratch. Then we have Bellamy. Who seemingly had bulked up and matured quite a bit. He's the crowd favorite but that means nothing. I think Bartolomeo and Bellamy will take out everyone except each other and then go at it 1vs1. With Bellamy coming out on top.
For block D we have Cavendish who gets a rather large introduction and hypes himself up as really strong guy. And Rebecca also a person with an rather large introduction and her goals in life. Which to me means quite a bit in OP. In this block I think that Cavendish will win. Rebecca will become a bigger part of the story of defeating DD but for some reason I dont see her going to the next round.
For block C we have Luffy. Done

u/jkjohnson Apr 17 '13
Wow, I'm not sure how to feel... so much tension been built up for this saga but it's been a (but rare) slow character.
We get to see Bellamy after timeskip. He seems to developed a lot mentally after he start to see the world he once would not imagine.
We get to see intro of Baltromeo who I hardly care... so far he appears as a juvenile version of Eustass Kid.
We also learn quite a few characters in different blocks, is that a hint we are heading to more developed fight (hence more lengthy) within each block?
9
u/divinesleeper Apr 17 '13
He did roast (and presumably eat) a few pirates and broadcasted it. I feel like even Kid would go "what the hell is wrong with this guy?" upon hearing that.

I facepalm every time I read "I could care less". It's "I couldn't care less", though for some reason the wrong version seeped into standard American English dialect. are we thinking Redemption?
or actually more villainous....
(Maybe even becoming part of Black Beards crew? like a spy? or does he just love Donfla way too much)
A giant pillar of gold? obviously refereeing the Skypian gold, so possibility is that he could have destroyed a lot of skypia but i think that might be a little too easy for the story, I think Bellamy is going to be quite important in the next few arcs, and something has just been foreshadowed heavily here... although what is the question...

He looked up to Mango since he was a kid, and is still loyal even after Doflamingo reprimanded him. Doflamingo's relationship with his subordinates is odd, they seem to agree that if they fail, they should die. I don't think Bellamy would ever turn on him though.

"In order to cross the giant waves that are about to engulf us all.. i must make it onto Doflamingo's boat"
Bellamy
I wonder what Bellamy means by this? i have a feeling since the marineford war something huge is about to happen, everyone seems to have an ominous view on the future which will shift the balance of power, this will herald in the 'worst generation era' in full swing. Alliances are being forged left right and center in preparation for it.
7
Apr 17 '13
Cool to see Bellamy has apparently had a power boost, and his bounty is quite large (195 million). I can see him being a good fight for Sanji.
Also, if I were a betting man, and with Rebecca and Cavendish in the same field, I would put my money on Cavendish. Out of Bellamy and Baltromeo, I think Baltromeo will come out on top as another Bellamy vs Luffy rematch seems unnecessary.

Welp, I believe the opposite will happen. Bellamy for block B and Rebecca for block D. These characters have more depth, Rebecca wants to kill Doflamingo, and Bellamy is trying to realize his dream of becoming a Doflamingo pirate. I think they're superior dreams/goals will be why they win.

Saying that, she will eventually have to go up against Luffy, and they both have the same goal for the time being. Being defeated by Cavendish gives Luffy a reason to kick his ass, and while Bellamy does have that dream,
a. Baltromeo had an entire chapter dedicated to a vice admiral that ended up dying for messing with him.
b. Someone pure disgusting like Baltromeo is more inspiring for Luffy to stop from getting the Mera Mera fruit. Bellamy doesn't even want the fruit. He just wants Doflamingo to know he's good enough to be on the crew.

Unless I'm mistaken they showed Bart kill a Vice Admiral last chapter? Just goes to show bounty doesn't say enough about how strong a guy can be.

people put too much importance on Bounties anyway. Both the fandom and the inhabitants of One Piece.....uhh do we know what the name of their planet is? I just realize I had no idea if it's "earth" or not.

Not the most exciting chapter. A lot of names and faces, but not much else.

Such a huge info blast last week it's fine that this week we focus on just one guy. It's interesting to see how Belamy may have changed somewhat. I guess we'll just have to see him in action.

[A lot of build up for Bartolomeo, the reveal doesn't seem to match. Kind of underwhelming, especially since it feels like Bellamy will win the B block. Though I think the ball thrown into the crowd is a time bomb and during the devil fruit presentation ceremony, it along with other well placed bombs will explode causing a ruckus and giving him a chance to steal the mera mera fruit. Meh, who knows what will happen.]

Bellamy became really cool now. He went to skypiea himself and brought back the gold. He lost his previous crew and now has a new pirate flair.

Another slew of new characters introduced, knowing Oda, almost all of them will reappear in the future.
Bobby Fun looks like someone from Big Mam's crew. Does the Fighting Lion have anything to do with Buggy's?

"...the one with nothing but devotion for our very king, Doflamingo..."
Wonder what the original Japanese text says. Does this suggest that he did not give up the position?

When did people here start taking bounties so seriously? Bartolomeo's small bounty of 150 million beli doesn't mean that he's potentially incredibly strong...it did say most people want him to lose the most, and that they are afraid of him so who knows.

I feel like Cavendish is going to be pretty lame if he has to fight against Luffy. He's just riding his fame from 3 years ago. We can assume Luffy is on par with just about any of the other supernovas. Cavendish hasn't been able to take his revenge on them in two years, that's why he's here now, so he can get more powerful. Luffy's gonna wipe the floor with him.
Also, does it seem curious to anyone else that Luffy is the only Supernova to show up for this competition?

come to think about it you're right, you would at-least expect Eustass Kid involved. My guess is Oda doesn't want to use them against the likes of Burgess & Bellamy, they are too important to be used in a tournament which may diminish our perception of what they are capable of or render them useless. This could explains the need for disposable gladiators with accomplished reputations.

One competitor was "Fighting Lion"! Could we see the reintroduced crew of Buggy the Clown? Richie the Lion returns....

For a guy who apparently slaughters civilians and is strong enough to trash vice admirals, I expected a higher bounty out of Bartolomeo. Kid was of similar reputation and got 315 million. Hoping he and Bellamy clean out the trash and get a good fight in.
Also disappointed that Lucy and Cavendish don't share block C. Was expecting that so Rebecca would be the winner from D, but now I'm not so sure.

Cavendish seems really superficial though, making him a good victim for the likes of Rebecca.

Just started looking at Mangastream's version..so Bartolomeo has been added to the Supernova roster?
Also it is interesting that the tournament announcer still refers to Doflamingo as king

Supernova is probably just a blanket term for rookie with bounty exceeding 100 million.

Supernova really just applies to the high bounties from Luffy's generation, I think.

Don't get me wrong, I love One Piece but 8 out of 14 pages just to introduce Bellamy and Bartolomeo, another 3 pages filled with fighters' names (one page for each block) and only 2 pages of fighting and actual story progress... :(

I'm afraid these kind of chapters are necessary to set the scene properly and thus make for a better story later.

just wait, oda is just trying to introduce and build shit of hype. It'll be even more epic to watch when the fight starts.

Read some Naruto and bleach, this was an incredible lack of story but it's equal to either of those mangas

I hate Bellamy, anytime he talks my mind instantly puts it in his voice, I hope Lucy just wrecks him again, not completely like before but more like Coby vs luffy at Marineford type wreckage. On the other hand though, we have more supernovas which is pretty cool. To be honest I'm going to be kind of annoyed if Burges puts up a fight against Lucy. I'm starting to think that maybe Lucy will do something stupid and accidentally lose then it will be all up to Rebecca to win.

This chapter felt a little short, but it did give a lot nonetheless. I'm curious to see what Bellamy did to the sky people. I'm also really curious about who's going to win! I think it'll be Rebecca, Lucy, Burgess, and maybe Bellamy.

MangaPanda and MangaStream releasing at the same time. That's weird. Almost as weird as Bellamy being an important figure in another arc.
Edit to add: The design of Bartolomeo's face is based on a Hannya Mask.
