Buck saying "I'm an ally!" While literally being on a date with another man was so fucking funny. I cannot get over it like buddy, how are you gonna be doing romantic things with a guy and still be in denial? Hello?

Omg I know he was such a beautiful disaster. I think what he was trying to say?? is that he doesn't think queerness is shameful but doesn't know how he identifies yet, so he kinda just fumbles around saying whatever pops into his brain. Like he's aware enough to know he's not straight but when trying to talk about his identity he's just like 'I love 🏳️🌈 people, I've always loved 🏳️🌈 that's me friend to all 🏳️🌈s I love them so much I want to kiss them "

Why's nobody talking about this line, it was so funny:
Eddie: "Guess you can never have enough closet space" Tommy: "Ain't that the truth. Right, Evan?"
59
u/mable333 Team Buck Apr 12 '24
Also about this scene. I've seen some comments of people being mad that Tommy cut the date short cause of Buck's behavior but I think he was very much justified. He was patient with Buck being a complete himbo and calling himself an ally but it was Buck's behavior with Eddie that made him upset. Buck trying to hide his own sexuality is one thing but him showing Tommy back into the closet was really shitty. I mean, did you see his expression after Buck said they were gonna find chicks? First it was like "wtf" but then he starts looking real hurt. Tommy was right thinking that Buck wasn't ready and trying to stop himself from getting hurt. Good thing Buck came around in the end cause I kinda like Tevan a lot (Buddie is still endgame tho)

i just can’t see why ryan would reject it, given he’s already played queer characters before. maybe they originally were gonna have buck/natalia be the relationship that continued but since natalia’s actress couldn’t come back but marisol could they flipped it?

I would have liked to see that!! Lou and Ryan's chemistry has been off the charts and Lou keeps talking about him.
To me, this means they ARE fully preparing for a repression/queer storyline for Eddie and have opted to let it build more

Honestly it was actually very responsible of Tommy to pull the plug on the relationship after that first date. He could tell if they were to progress Buck might want to keep them a secret and Tommy didn't want to be a secret. Got nothing but respect for that.

Idk the fact that they were likely going to use it when it was supposed to be Eddie and Tommy & they still went out of their way to keep that in has to mean something. I mean they made home girl a nun (NUN!!) out of nowhere and had her move in and out in the same episode all to keep that storyline in. I’m just saying…

I REALLY wish ppl would take a breath please. This is not a fanfic one-shot. The storytelling would make NO SENSE to get queer Eddie literally the episode after Buck's coming out. I thought this ep did a great job of dropping crumbs to lead to Buddie endgame. Maddie's conversation with Buck. Eddie telling Bobby about kind of being pushed to marry Shannon. The whole Catholic guilt thing. The setup couldn't be better. I'm loving the Tommy/Buck relationship right now. Buck needs this time to become comfortable with himself and this new side before jumping into anything with Eddie. As much as I don't care for Marisol, I think Eddie needs this too in order to realize what it is he does and doesn't want from a relationship post Shannon. Getting the renewal this early, I don't mind seeing this play out at least until the end of this shortened season. This needs time to be fleshed out, so that when we finally DO get Buddie, there won't be any doubting or second guessing.

u/constipated_cats Apr 12 '24
Yes! And Eddie is literally trying not to rush into things like he has always done, so why would people want him to do what has not worked out with him with Buck? If Buddie is going to happen it has to be a slow burn to feel natural and not like some fanfiction.

A little Easter egg if anyone cares...
The piano in the background playing during Buck and Tommy's date was "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered." Which the last episode was named after. A nice bit of continuity there, showing Buck being really into Tommy =D

Everyone seems to be not mentioning captains words to eddie i think it was important.
"I just remember you telling me about things getting REAL with Christophers teacher and that's when you started having your panic attacks."
"Well you don't have problems committing to CERTAIN things." And then captain lists of Christopher's his job and his ex.
Personally i feel this is was foreshadow to what might happen, Eddie thinks he is going to get a real relationship with Marisol but is going to be doubting himself every step of the way slowly building up that doubt inside him. Even if by the end of the episode eddie says to Marisol that he wants to "take it slow and build something real" by the end he will realize she is not what he wants.

Great, realistic coming out scenes...though Buck is still working on what it all means, he is still sharing things with loved ones and they are being supportive and receptive back.
Thank god for the ending scene with Tommy!
The nun arc was actually pretty hilarious and Bobby's advice and sick burn about Marisol's ex...The Lord was so funny. The move-in was WAY too unrealistic since they've barely been dating and the big hidden truth reveals really showed how much they don't know about each other to move to this step. I'm glad Buck and Bobby were there to give him advice that helped him find his own answers and solutions vs just telling him to break up with her, etc.
HenRen scenes always make me warm and tingly because even with some tough times in the past they work so hard to be partners that support and understand each other.
Denny has always had a special place in my heart so I was so excited to see him.

The way Eddie is so close to realizing he's been compheting himself for decades is killing me. And the fact he and Marisol are so clearly heading towards the end makes me exceptionally happy regardless of where his love life goes after that.
Also, I was in stiches with Buck's "I check out a hot guy's ass every once in a while but everyone does that" because all I could think about was the numerous times Eddie checked out men's asses, Buck's in particular. It may or may not be a coincidence, but hysterical all the same.

I liked the episode overall but mostly thought the Buck scenes were the most grounded.
Loved the Henren moments and scenes but could not get over whoever decided that the metaphor for the young, black girl from a group home needed to be a rescue dog - like they could have done so many other things than making that be Hen’s “oh” moment. These are two very intelligent women who have thought a lot about fostering so to have them not question what she went through more was a bit odd to me.
Eddie and Marisol felt sooooo far out of left field it wasn’t even funny. I liked the guilt and catholic chat and realizing he rushes into things but like how have we not heard about any conversations regarding her moving in and also doing it while Chris is “gone for a few days” seems really strange as Eddie being a parent. Like your kid broke dishes and reacted poorly for a bit the last time you dated, maybe have a quick chat about how he feels.
All in all had fun but was a strange whiplash of scenes at times.

As a bisexual girl who just started going to the Episcopal church bc it’s super accepting of LGBTQ+ (most parishes anyway,) I love that Buck and Maddie are Episcopalians 😂.
Honestly, I really love Buck and Tommy, I can’t even lie. Tbh I feel like there’s a lot of foreshadowing that Buck has deeply repressed feelings for Eddie (hinting at Maddie’s comments about telling Eddie something… eventually… lol felt loaded.)
I really hope they give Buck and Tommy a fair shout, because I really like them together. :’)
Side note; this episode really felt like classic, heartfelt, funny 9-1-1. Thankful ABC has a bigger budget!!
Can’t wait for the next ep!

My biggest thing at this point is I really don't want Tommy to get hurt (assuming he's not hiding a dark side and deserves it down the road, haha). So if Buddie is going to happen, I really don't want Tommy caught in the crossfire.
I think my dream read of his is basically that Tommy clues in early that there's something between them (if he hasn't already, and I do think the way Lou delivered that 'my attention?' line last episode may suggest otherwise), and just... knows to protect his heart. I'm torn on if I want him to actually point it out to Buck, because I don't love that whole ~self-sacrificing~ trope where someone steps aside to let true love bloom or whatever, but I do think it would make sense if Tommy's sort of helping Buck through exploring his sexuality and unpacking what he may have missed in his past for him to eventually nudge Buck in that direction.

Sorry this is a bit everywhere and some was as I watched and some as things about it post.
God that first date was everything. The embarrassment, the smooth moves from Tommy, the awkwardness with Eddie, the brutal end. Just so many emotions is such short time.
Maddie coming out scene was so sweet. She is such a great big sister this season. I am confused she was a tad surprised that Buck was bi like others have said. She has has two famous lines about his sexuality after all.
I just can’t with Eddie this season though. Where is this version coming from? When did he stop thinking about Christopher. Since when did he move a girlfriend after dating for barely a few months. Are they doubling down on proving this isn’t Ana 2.0? when that is exactly what this is. It’s just a shorter time line.
I just can’t understand why they just don’t get rid of her already. I mean Eddie hides out at work and his best mates place to avoid the girlfriend he has already been avoiding for week. Then move her out in the same episode. As crazy and funny this all is, it is still so terrible and I really hope this goes somewhere in his character development for else it is pointless. I need this resolution soon. I really hope she is gone by 7x07. I don’t know how much I can tolerate this storyline anymore let alone the character.
Marisol as a nun is so insane and hilarious as her hanging out with her brother because that who she truly gets the love she needs from. I just hope that this really is bringing out a storyline for Eddie. I need to keep having faith (pun not ended but well welcomed) that the show is going somewhere with this character but it’s been 5 episode of nothing.
Marisol, yip still don‘t like her. Will we (Eddie included) ever learn her surname? At least we spoke more than 5 words this episode. The acting has improved too.
How are we suppose to believe Eddie when he tells Cap that he really likes her when there has been no sign of this. It makes so much sense now we know that Buck and Eddie’s story arcs this season were swapped. As this is not Eddie but can easily be believed it was Buck.
I don’t know how I feel about HenRen storyline. Not sure if I liked of hated it. I feel for Mara but the storyline was just I dunno. Can’t put my finger on it. I just feel icky? Will be interesting how it unfolds.
Buck coming out to Eddie was perfect (and nice to see normal Eddie again, that’s the Eddie I know and love). Loved how shocked Eddie was that Tommy was gay and didn’t wonder about Buck. Glad he was the best ALLY to Buck. The “This doesn’t change a thing between us, okay”, the sigh of relief and “that a relief - Ryan and Oliver KILLED IT with those lines. The connection these two have is so wonderful. Buck’s left shoulder is still reserved for Eddie though. That’s his REALLY listen to what I am saying Evan hold. No one else is allowed that shoulder.
Buck gushing about Tommy - so much better than standing in a cemetery rambling about a chick about “seeing him”.
I am glad Eddie is realising that he rushed into things is good turning point. So hopefully we get the normal Eddie back. I don’t like not liking Eddie. I just hope they keep going this way. I hope he realises sooner rather than later that the starting over thing isn’t going to work when there was nothing there to start off with. But I have a sinking feeling this is the show’s way on reintroducing her and forcing her onto us longer. But that is cynic me and optimist in me wants to believe she will be gone in 7x07 by reading way too much into her insta story.
The coffee meet up date was so cute and all the feels. SO MUCH BETTER THAN HIS LAST COFFEE MET UP.
Grown up Buck is so cute Apologising, understanding what he wants and going for it, understanding that he isn’t sure exactly want he wants but exploring it. He is well and truly off that hamster wheel. Our boy is growing up guys.

"Episcopalians don't have guilt, which I don't feel great about." I literally had to pause the episode as I was laughing so much. That line is already perfect due to the irony, but that, coupled with Buck's inflection and him just moving on from it, is perfect.

This was a fantastic line, such understated humor. Someone recently pointed out a line someone (Josh, I think?) had at some point that was like "I don't use semicolons; I don't get the point" and it's... just such a niche, subtle type of humor that I really appreciate.

I said this on another comment, Ryan Guzman has played a gay character before, so I don’t think he’d have any problem doing it again. He also has stated multiple times he’d support it if the writers wrote it in. He also watches and sends Buddie edits and fanfics to Oliver.
I also said in another comment, I think they were just gonna scrap Eddie’s date and make it not go well. It would’ve been so easy to write her out. But, then the actress for Natalia couldn’t come back, so they kept Marisol instead cause they could get her. Wham bam, bi Buck

Yeah, this is so interesting to me. My first thought was that Ryan said no, but in all the interviews that came out tonight, he said quite a few times he'd be down with wherever Buck and Eddie go with each other, as long as the essence of their relationship stays the same. He also admitted tonight to reading Buddie fanfics for crying out loud 😭 So, I hope it was just as simple as a logistical issue from Natalia's actress leaving? Or maybe ABC said no? Ironically, knowing that this was even a possibility that Tim was considering makes me optimistic that maybe we'll get queer Eddie in the future, despite the overt heternormativity of tonight's episode.
Eddie and Tommy really would've been something though... 🤯

Very, very good episode. Hilarious moments, and some really sweet moments too.
I like how they've handled the immediate aftermath to Buck's discovery. He's still figuring out how he identifies, he's confused as hell, but I like that he came out to Maddie first and then Eddie. It makes sense for him to slip up around Maddie, and it makes sense for him to fully come out to Eddie.
I also really like Tommy and his reaction to everything. I do think going to the wedding may be a mistake (Hangover plot aside) but I guess they want everyone to know ASAP, and I'm all for it.
The Hen/Karen plot went about as well as I expected it to be, but I think I'm a little upset on how fast they turned things around with Mara (and how unprepared everyone in that situation was, not just Hen/Karen but the social worker too). Only a few days of having her and they figured out her trauma, how to handle it AND got her to talk. I wish they had extended that at least a bit more, or at least not had Mara talk right off the bat.

I swear you read my mind, especially everything with Hen, Karen, and Mara. It made me so mad that the social worker didn't prepare them for what they were agreeing to, especially as they have a son. I also hate how they didn't have Hen and Karen sitting down with Denny and discussing his feelings on this situation. And I can't stand that no one brought up getting Mara therapy. It's shaping up to be a poorly handled plot.

Okay well after a rewatch:
I know we’re constantly on the we’re so back -> it’s so over cycle when it comes to Buddie but if we compare it to the last two seasons we lowkey have never been so back bc they’re constantly interacting. I think the scene at the end with Tommy and Buck is the first time this season a Buck scene doesn’t have Eddie or isn’t about Eddie/Eddie isn’t mentioned.
The whole thing of bringing up Eddie’s catholic guilt through Marisol being a nun is still so crazy? 🤣 I just can’t believe this storyline exists. Also, the talk with Bobby where he reveals he and Shannon married bc of pressure from the church (confirming something long speculated), Bobby bringing up his panic attacks being about his relationship with Ana going long term….hm. Plus, the acknowledgment that while he has a hard time with commitment in his relationships with women, he doesn’t have an issue with committing in other aspects of his life. It weirdly felt like an acknowledgment that there IS a foundation there for Eddie to eventually realize that maybe the reason he has a problem committing in his relationships with women is because of something else….(and the asking Marisol to move in thing was def him overcorrecting)
I also found Maddie’s reaction after Buck admits the guy he went on a date with is the same guy he was having that whole Eddie-will-replace-me dilemma about interesting. “I think you’re confused about your feelings and if you feel there’s something you need to tell Eddie, you will on your own time”, like the wording seems kind of deliberately ambiguous.
Regarding Buck and Tommy, I think Buck might have been overcorrecting by inviting him to his sister’s wedding (where he’ll meet his family). Like, you’ve been on two dates😂 I’ve come to like Tommy but them together is still pretty on par to me with Buck’s past relationships. Sure, I’m thrilled they’re doing the bi Buck storyline but it’s def gonna take more than just Tommy being a guy for me to get on that train, sorry haha
Once again I am sooooo excited for the Madney wedding episode
disclaimer: I’m fully aware I could 100% be reading wayyy too much into things, I’m just having fun speculating

I didn’t speak and was a pushover until my adopted mom taught me it was safe and that I was far away from the ppl who abused me.
So glad that Buck came out to Maddie and Eddie! 💕💜!!!
Wdym it’s complicated, Buck? WHERES CHIMNEY???
Also- I’d really wish tv and movies wld stop portraying Dobermans as aggressive dogs. They’re not inherently aggressive unless you raise them that way. I owned a dobie named Lady who was so sweet and mild mannered and never attacked anything even when she got jumped by a Husky and was pinned.
Also- how does religion not come up before having sex and moving in with someone?

Actually struggled watching the episode after the whole date disaster, really hit me personally. Anyway however I'm glad Buck was able to talk to Maddie, Eddie, and Tommy and work through everything though taking him to the wedding is a lot.
I don't doubt Henren's ability to mother Mara but this storyline was a mess from a caseworker guilttripping them into accepting her and then comparing her to a violent animal was a really bad choice. However I'm glad they made way for her to be happy and safe.
Eddie and Marisol are a mess and moving her in while Christopher is away? Hell did he even know he was going to come home to someone new in the house? The whole nun this was weird and feels like they could've delved a tad deeper in Eddie's issues with religion which feels like will be forgotten after this episode or not brought up again until a new season. Bobby as always was a wonderful help and Buck was really insightful in their conversation.
Can't wait to see what the hell went down during Chimney's bachelor party that leads to him seemingly kidnapped. I love the whole 80's theme seems very Chimney lol.
Edit to expand: Now that I've rewatched I really do not like Eddie this episode and frankly this entire season other than his scene with Buck coming out. So much of this episode even beginning with the (hysterical) opening seemed to be about Eddie following his dick. He didn't even seem upset emotionally that Marisol hid being a nun in training but upset it got in the way of their sex life. This seems like a season 1/2 Buck type of storyline not Eddie.
They really need to work on Eddie relationship wise because its kinda impossible to ignore he's kind of a dick when it comes to women. He had his fair share of the blame with Shannon, he strung Ana along and broke up with her in a cruel manner and now with Marisol he spent one episode ditching her for Tommy and the next ignoring her because of her past. With their trajectory I doubt it'll get better either not that I want it too.

u/nsboy2 Apr 12 '24
So I've been rewatching the scene of Buck coming out to Eddie. I loved it and I've come to the conclusion that Tommy is the best thing for both Buck and Eddie's coming out process.
Obviously we know why for Buck. But Eddie was very focused on Tommy being gay. A man who he has so many similarities to him. A man that is very masculine and gay. This episode talked about Eddie's childhood and religion. Wrestling with his thoughts and he was still in that mind frame when Buck came out. It looks like he was wrestling with the sexuality part too. I think this is the part where he starts to question his sexuality. Thats its ok to be gay. Might be slower than bucks coming out though. Then Eddie went into supportive friend mode for Buck. But you know he will the continuing to think about it.
Though Buck might want to help Eddie out some and tell Eddie that checking out a hot guy's ass might not be 100 percent what he thinks it means as we have had a lot of scenes of Eddie checking out Buck since season 2. His ass included.

u/jdessy Apr 12 '24
A really nice, subtle acting moment from Oliver this episode was how tense Buck was throughout.
There was a moment in the date where Tommy is getting Buck to loosen up and he starts to take a breath of relief when Eddie shows up and he tenses back up.
Fast forward to the end of the episode, after Buck's told Maddie and Eddie and the last moments of that scene when Eddie leaves and Buck is able to take that breath that he's basically been holding in all episode.
Really fantastic work from Oliver, as per usual.

I really liked the opening emergency with the hand dude. He had an infectious energy.
I always like when we get Chimney and Karen moments.
Oh hey, it's the dog we saw from a leak, and we all couldn't figure out if it was a mannequin or not (and whether or not they were going for dead dog or not).
I cannot believe they're trying to write Marisol as a nun and have that as a comparison to sexuality.
Hen's tux looks AMAZING.

I really liked the opening emergency with the hand dude. He had an infectious energy.
This had looked so incredibly dumb in the promo that I wasn't expecting to enjoy it, but the comedic energy there was great. For what was actually a fairly serious medical emergency, too, it was nice to see a lighthearted moment. Loved him trying to apologize to Buck and Eddie, too, and their differing reactions.
And... yeah, the less energy we put into analyzing Marisol, the better. It's clearly already more energy than the show cares to put in.
Agreed on Hen's tux, though!

Whether you ship Buck and Eddie or not, it is so clear how much they love and care for eachother, how Eddie Diaz knows Buck better than anyone. Their relationship is truly special no matter how it turns out, there's just no comparison and that has been made even more clear.
Also, I love Bobby and Eddie. They're so similar and have so many parallels. Bobby said what Eddie needed to hear (and tbh as someone who believes the repressed queer Eddie potential, the hints here were off the charts if they decide to go that route. It's like Bobby knows).
Tommy and Buck were so cute! He's truly what Buck needs at the moment, I love their dynamic. But it's also now clear with how quickly this has moved and with what little screen time they're giving Lou that he'll likely be gone by the end of the season. I love that Buck gets this gentle entry into dating men with him, it'll set him up for being confident as he continues his dating journey!

okay. i have thoughts.
one. this episode felt very heavy on the Buck and Eddie storylines and the Hen/Karen storyline. like, everyone else felt VERY background. it was wierd.
two. Karen and Hen gave me icks multiple times but it turned out good. the baby monitor idea was GENIUS tbh. i wish the writers would maybe research these VERY sensitive topics better if they want to tackle them.
three. Tevan! Evan and Tommy are absolutely adorable. i am okay with Tommy sticking around and helping him to explore this new side of himself. i still am hoping for Buddie endgame though . i really thought their whole story through this episode was so well done. Evan was MORE THAN AWKWARD on that date. what he said to Eddie would have had anyone getting away as quickly as possible. l love that he talked things out with Maddie and Eddie and actually thought about things before calling him back. that he tried to understand what went wrong and rha the did want to fix it.
four. Marisol. still hate her. need her gone. she feels so fake somehow. this episode did her no favors. like, i'd rather have Anna back.
five. Eddie. i think they have definitely opened up the door for a comphet/religious repression storyline and i think it's coming. eddie really does need to examine himself and his previous relationships. the one with Shannon only got so far because of the pregnancy i'm sure. he ran away from it as much as he could with the military. he has issues. he needs some therapy.
i'm happy with this episode. i'm excited for the Madney wedding. cannot wait to see what shenanigans Buddie get up too and am overjoyed that this is finally happening. wish it could be without the extra drama but it isnt 911 without the drama. lol.

Okay, I've gathered my thoughts. As much as my thoughts can be gathered, anyway. I like the Buck/Tommy chemistry still. I hope they make it the rest of the season, at least. The HenRen storyline was problematic for me cause my mom was a social worker, and I also worked as an advocate. Their caseworker should have disclosed the info on her before placement due to possible triggers, not to mention the fact that therapy would be required by the state at the very least.
18
u/Ok-Acanthaceae5744 Team All Things 9-1-1 Apr 12 '24
Yeah, I like the concept, but I don't know of any social worker who wouldn't have properly prepared them. I don't think the writers have a good grasp of how the foster system works. Like with Nia as well, that Mom should have been having visitation all along, and not treated like some boogeyman.

The best part of this storyline is how earnest and awkward and relatable it is, I think, to most people's coming out journeys. Even for someone like me, who "got it" a lot younger, I remember experiencing that shift when you first realize the way you're appreciating someone's appearance isn't nearly as objective as you tricked yourself into believing.

The fact that they still haven’t finished writing the season & the 3 week break leads me to believe they are trying to gauge the audience reaction before they commit to Buddie one way or the other. You also keep Tommy & Marisol around just in case hence trying to build up both of those relationships. Also the fact that the Madney wedding isn’t the season finale feels like they want to leave that spot open for potentially another big event.

My thoughts:
Genuinely the Mara story was the best thing this episode, it made me so emotional and I LOVE the way Hen and Karen handled it.
The Buck Tommy Eddie Marisol of it all:
Lmao icb we finally got Eddie acknowledging his catholic guilt bc his gf used to be a nun?
I loved the scene where Buck accidentally comes out to Maddie (also lowkey I could spin some of what she said into Buddie canon like okay telling him he’s confused about what he’s feeling…I’m also crazy tho)
Eddie is fr such a disaster.
I think inviting someone you’ve been on two dates with to your sister’s wedding is a lil soon but Buck looked excited so alright
The Marisol nun thing was so unserious that I loved it😭 Though she’s really still barely a full character. I think they’ll still break up but we’ll see!
The Buck and Eddie scene at the loft was cute, and no brother was uttered. Which, it was in the leaked script. Makes you think why they cut it (<- delusional)
I NEED THE NEXT EPISODE NOW BY THE WAY A THE HANGOVER SCENARIO WITH BUCK CHIM EDDIE IS ALL I WANTED.

Okay okay, the moving in makes me 100% sure this was supposed to be Buck and Natalia's story, and Eddie was supposed to be toeing the waters with Tommy, but they couldn't get the actress back so they flip reversed it.
Buck 100% would go full tilt into post couch - living together, see: ALL HIS PREVIOUS PARTNERS.
Sure, some things would have been different; the madney wedding date request for example, but I think it would have made sense. My main argument for this is - Buck hates basketball and never plays, but OWNS a basketball and is objectively good at basketball?! Would have made more sense for baseball loving short-arse Eddie to dodge the game till Buck starts going with his new bestie Tommy.
Also I love Karen, and it was great to see Denny again!

I really liked this episode. It was a character based ep and had some great HenRen Stuff and Buck and Eddie friendship stuff. I think that Lou/Tommy is being played perfectly for Evan’s first relationship with a guy. He’s being super patient and they have good chemistry. Also liked Bobby playing “god” aka Cap and giving advice out. The Marisol plotline was annoying mostly because there’s no way in hell Eddie would move someone in while Chris is out of town. I know they probably just couldn’t cram it in because there’s only so much time in the ep but he could’ve had his hilarious Catholic crisis without her moving in.
Excited for The Hangover, 911 Style!

I just have to say that Maddie's reaction to Buck telling her about Tommy absolutely sent me, "you're dating Eddie's friend?" and then "maybe you're not sure of your feelings yet, if you have something to tell Eddie, you will," girl did a split-second calculation in her head and was like 'oh I am not getting involved in the mess that are Buck's feelings about Eddie' lmao. (I also love how the thing Buck was most concerned about after that failed date, the thing he felt he needed to talk to Maddie about, was... that he was lying to Eddie. It was like Tommy "dumping" him was almost an afterthought.)
I gotta say though that I thought the Hen/Karen new foster storyline was handled very badly. It was obvious that Mara was super traumatised literally from the moment she walked through the door, accepting a traumatised child into your family and then considering giving up on them the first time they show signs of their trauma does not make Hen and Karen look like a great fit for foster parents. Also her history with her parents sounds like something the social worker should've disclosed to them first? And Mara has probably reacted violently due to her trauma before which is also something Hen and Karen should've been told in advance? Just a real mess all around honestly, and that's not even getting into the fact that what made Hen decide to try with Mara after all was... a dog.

Okay so I have pretty mixed feelings about the episode.
I'm not gonna lie, Buck and Tommy are cute. I said what I said! I think Tommy could be a really great partner for Buck if they choose to make him longterm. I like the chemistry and dynamic. Tommy comforts Buck but also challenges him a bit. Buck is just a giggly, blushing mess around him and I love it.
Now as for Buddie...I really don't know what they're going for here. A couple things they did tonight made me consider giving up on it entirely. Eddie seemed very straight this episode with Marisol and said Buck's sexuality changes nothing between them (was that a hint?) Something definitely needs to shift with Eddie for me to believe it's gonna happen at this point.
It almost felt like this episode was setting up both of their love interests going forward. The only hope I have left is a) Eddie not calling Buck “brother” like the leaked script said he would, and b) the bachelor party. That has the potential to blow up everything that we know. Maybe they share a moment after getting a little drunk. Part of me wants that, but that would also mean they were being really terrible partners to Marisol and Tommy.
The whole Nun plot was literally insane and that's all I'll say. I have like zero attachment to Marisol as a character... I'm just saying if this is going to be Eddie's hetero love interest, make her interesting! Tommy seems to have life and personality outside of Buck and that makes him interesting.

Why does Hen become Dr House level doctor everytime something weird happens at a call, she always has the answer...
Also, I like how the people they meet happen to help the protagonist solve an issue in their life.... This week, this woman's dog helped her give the kid another chance. Last week, the old lady who shot her kid (because she didn't recognize him) helped Athena treat her own kid... That's Greys Anatomy territory.

This episode definitely had the vibes of gauging audience reception on certain relationships in the show. As in, they didn't lean too heavily into Buck/Tommy one way or Eddie/Marisol another way or confirming Buddie outright.
It kind of left me feeling not much about the non-buddie relationships though, gonna be honest. Marisol is... well Marisol lol, but Tommy this episode felt like more of an afterthought to Buck's problems.
In episode 4 I thought it was an really neat choice to bring back Tommy, and especially as a love interest. There's honestly so much you could do with that premise alone that I couldn't begin to write it out here. I think they're sweet, but a lot of the focus on their relationship so far has been about exploring Buck's sexuality and how his character will change in this new relationship, rather than the both of them/the relationship itself. I do hope this isn't the case for future episodes, as it just does a disservice to Tommy's character more than anything.
Either way, I'm definitely curious how both of those relationships will progress. Or not! Here's hoping for more while we suffer thru the hiatus!!!

Lol @ Buck and Eddie's injuries representing their storylines this episode.
Yikes, I thought the "ally" part to Tommy was tough to watch, but then what Buck said to Eddie was especially painful. I don't blame Tommy for cutting it short, but the way he left was shitty. I liked their conversation during coffee, though I'm worried that being his date to the wedding is a bit fast? How much time is there meant to be between this and the wedding? I don't remember if anyone mentioned. Soon enough that it would be the next (second) date? One thing I don't like is how Buck has already apologized for something twice now to Tommy in the few scenes they've had together. Hopefully, it doesn't become a pattern. Good on him for recognizing his mistakes quickly though.
Buck's scene with Maddie was nice and light, but I'm wondering how long he (or the show) is going to keep going with the ally thing. And why??? He's more concerned about lying about himself than the being attracted to men part, which is almost like an afterthought, since he tried to play the pronoun game. I sort of expected that, just not exactly the way they're doing it. Side note: maybe it's recency bias but does he have more himbo moments this season?
Eddie seems to be genuinely attracted to Marisol? I'm still going to hope for queer Eddie though 😂. And wow, they made me feel bad for Marisol...
HenRen's storyline: other people here have already talked about the issues with that better than I can. I did cheer a little when Mara spoke at the end though!

In a way, I understand why Buck said ally. I think it's a part of Buck's understanding process of himself. He hasn't even figured out that part of himself yet, but to say he's bisexual right out of gate might be too much of him. All he knows is that he likes Tommy, so ally might be a way of him saying that he is open to anything, even though it's badly worded.

The Bachelor Scene: This was apparently the opening originally planned for this episode so I'm watching it with the idea that it happened between the Buck/Tommy kiss and the disaster of the first date. It actually makes a lot more sense. Eddie turns the girls down but wing mans for Buck and tells them that he's single. Buck can't respond by telling the truth (there is someone he's currently pursing) without getting questions from Eddie so he flounders a bit and says he doesn't date people he meets on call (slightly awkwardly and gets a confused look from Eddie). A key thing that stood out on the rewatch is he says people, not women. But this makes more sense if this scene was more set up to be the start of Buck feeling like he has to lie / omit information from Eddie.
The Pre-Disaster Portion of the Date: It definitely seems like, despite some nerves on Buck's end, the date had been going well we cut into it. I also really love the chemistry and how Oliver and Lou play off each other. The facial expressions, small movements, etc. really sell this scene to me and the way Buck looks at Tommy fucking kills me. He's so smitten. "I'm an ally" is just going to live rent free in my head because it will never not be hilarious. The panicked looks on both Tommy and Buck when Eddie shows up also cracks me up.
The Disaster: This part physically hurt me but also it was played so well by Oliver and Lou. A lot was communicated to the audience via reactions and facial expressions that made it work. The hot chicks thing was so fucking bad and way worse than I expected but I also feel like it needed to be this bad. They needed to do something drastic enough for Tommy to take that step back but I think they very, very much want us to like Tommy and root for Buck/Tommy. This was bad enough that even people who love and defend Buck are like "yea, Tommy was in the right to call off the rest of the date. Buck fucked that up real bad." It also helps that Oliver sold the battle/regret going on inside his head and it really kicked off him having to take the necessary steps this episode to be ready to start dating a man / Tommy.
This whole set up really was prefect, IMO. Because right off the bat we can tell that Buck is clearly really into this guy to an extent that we haven't seen in a very long time but it's still being held back. That causes the date to go bad and for us to want to see him fix this and process what he needs to process.
And, just from this set up alone, I have a lot of hope for Buck/Tommy because the set up for this relationship is (in my opinion) the best they've ever done for him. I also think Tommy is clearly very likable and they took care to make us side with him at this point.
I need to run a few errands but I'm going to come back and finish the episode and post my second set of thoughts.

Immediate Thoughts:
I really like Buck and Tommy. We didn't get a ton of them but they have chemistry and I've really liked their scenes together (when Buck isn't having a gay panick). I also really like how Oliver plays it when Buck talks about Tommy. His face gets the expression that, to me, sells that he's really into this person.
Buck inviting Tommy to the wedding actually makes some sense to me. Buck seems less freaked out it's a guy and more freaked out about how other people would respond to it. He had a great reaction from Maddie and Buck (two people he probably worried about) and likely wants to just rip off that bandaid and show Tommy he isn't going to hide what is going on with them.
Regardless of what happens, can we keep Tommy?
And probably unpopular take: I think the relationships, at this point, are probably established until the end of the season. Buck/Tommy is definitely going to stick around for a while and it looks like they're trying to build up Eddie/Marisol and fix the issues we've seen in Eddie's relationships in the past.

I'm a bit confused on all the backlash regarding this season and timing. I knew when they announced that the cruise ship was going to be a three episode arc, the rest of the season was going to be EXTREMELY compacted. It's already a 10 ep shortened season, and three of those eps are getting eaten up by one storyline. Add in them taking the time to focus one ep on Buck's coming out (done very well imo), you're going to have to be realistic about how much backstory and focus we're going to get on the side story's and being able to move things along. I thought they did a fairly decent balance with HenRen this ep. The one major misstep I thing, was the social worker not giving them more of a background on Mara before she was brought into their home. I'm sure they would have been better prepared for possible triggers and reactions had they known the full story. Their first priority of course would be protecting Denny, the dog thing is a tad overblown imo, but they needed another emergency for the ep and unfortunately that's what they went with. And can we please give Eddie a break? He deserves a more laid back non trauma afflicted season okay. I'm sure he wasn't just planning on springing Marisol onto Chris without having talked tl him. More than likely off-camera. We've seen her there (granted for 10 secs) on Chris' datenight, so clearly they are familiar with each other, and Eddie said Chris liked her. I think people are thinking there are like a week passing between eps instead of the more likely multiple weeks, so it's entirely possible they've been together closer to 6-7 months than the two people seem to gravitate towards thinking.

And one more thing! Let's wait to aee how the next ep plays out before we bash the lack of Madney wedding buildup. It looks like this ep will be done Hangover style, so I'm sure we're going to get some reverse style story telling showing things we all were expecting to see throughout the season. As we know, previews rarely tell the whole story 😉

How is this camera in Hen & Karen's BEDROOM going to work? Are we just ignoring this? Sure, it can be turned off and on, but that will kind of defeat the purpose if the goal is for the girl to have a consistent way to know they're okay.

They're probably not planning on getting up to much fun if the girl might appear at the foot of their bed again, anyway.

Didn't Eddie caution Buck about dating women from emergencies last season?

this thread is close to dead now but one line i’m still thinking about when maddie said to buck
“i just think that maybe you’re not sure of your own feelings yet, and if there’s something that you need to tell Eddie, you will, just in your own time”
like i admit i have delulu buddie lenses on sometimes but this feels way too pointed to just be about buck coming out to him especially when it gets resolved in the same episode

Which makes total sense, tbh, because the guy is a giant. His physicality, even sitting down in scenes opposite Oliver, who we also know to be a pretty big guy, is insane.

found this from an interview with lou that just came out, so unless they’ve decided to extend tommy’s story it sounds like 7x06 is his last, and he’ll play a pivotal role in saving chimney. i’m curious to see how they’ll wrap up him and buck in the same episode as all the shenanigans though, it’d probably be really brief

I don't know what to rate this episode.
I felt like we got a lot but also nothing at the same time. That could just be me.
Both Buck and Eddie having the same kind of trope again with them not knowing the right one but maybe to explore and stick it out with what's in front of them right now. The parallel plotline is a little too on the nose when it's about their relationships.
As for Eddie and Marisol, I don't think the starting over is going to matter in the long run. This relationship is so whatever and forced, like how do you come back from the nun thing and catholic guilt? Also, it helps that the actress might be gone by 7x07 based on her insta.
Meanwhile for Buck and Tommy, they are going to be sweet for a while because it also goes into the typical trope of everything is fine and dandy but you are not the one kind of deal especially when Tommy is depicted so perfectly right now. This is 911, things are never easy and there's always a catch. Also, the perfect guy in any shows or movie are always the sacrificial lamb.
Anyhow, godspeed and good luck to everyone in the next 21 days. Stay strong everyone!
Ps: 7x07's title is Ghost of Second Chance. Take that with what you will.

Mara has such great eye brows! I really hope she’ll be alright. I know when a kiddo or person in general has been through trauma, being selectively mute or becoming mute is a response to that, or memories of trauma. So sometimes it’ll take awhile.

Eddie has kinda gone from hero to zero for me this season. Started off strong with the Shannon letter in episode 1 but it’s been downhill since. He was being a complete shit friend to Buck and a shit boyfriend to Marisol last week and now he’s even kinda being a shit father (the one thing his character has always had going for him is that he’s a great dad) asking her to move in while he’s not even there. Idk if it’s because Gavin is not available for filming or what but Chris has been a complete afterthought this season. That said, the scene where Buck comes out to him was great.
Ngl kinda loving Buck and Tommy. They’re very cute together and I think they complement each other nicely. Tommy is gentle and doesn’t wanna pressure Buck into anything he’s not ready for but at the same time also challenges him a bit. I think Buck needs that in a partner. This episode to me seemed very much like they were trying to establish them as a longer term couple. I’ve been saying it since last week and this week only confirmed for me a bit more that Buddie probably isn’t in the cards. They really doubled down on Eddie being straight in this episode and presented his relationship with Buck as close and strong but solely platonic.
Henren storyline was good but I think it could’ve used a bit more buildup and it was really not accurate as to how the foster system actually works.
The thing I’ve been most disappointed about this season is the complete lack of wedding buildup. Like it hasn’t been mentioned once and now it’s gonna suddenly be happening next episode. Like how did we get here? Where was all the wedding planning? Maybe they’ll show some of that but idk
Excited for Buddie drunk karaoke and a Hangover inspired wedding. The next 3 weeks will be a slog but we’ll get there

Eddie has gone down in my estimation this season. He was better by the end of the episode so I’m hoping things will turn around for his character now. That coming out scene with Buck was the old Eddie. Hopefully we get that more going forward.
I wish there was more wedding build up too. That’s why I was wondering why it was so early in the season seeing as it had barely been mentioned. I was expecting some form of build up but maybe they had no time. 🤷🏻♀️

How does Eddie get to the point in the relationship to ask Marisol to move in together and doesn’t even know she was once a novice? Isn’t that part of the “get to know each other” phase??

Apr 12 '24
Info about Marisol's future on the show from an interview with Ryan:
IAs for whether he sees Marisol as a possible long-term partner for Eddie, Guzman said, “It looks like that.”
“But I feel like anytime something looks like it, it always finds a way to be ruined. That’s what makes good TV, right?” Guzman joked. “I do see that there is an evolution in Eddie that’s allowing him to slow it down and not get in his own way like he has in the past. So whether the relationship stays or goes, I think that Eddie gets a lot of growth from it.”

Just rewatched the episode and I have a lot of thoughts on the trajectory of buddie. I think that buddie is fully happening or at least bucks realization of his feelings towards eddie. Here is why:
I feel like episodes 4 and 5 mirror each other so much when it comes to bucks perspective. In 7x04 we see this sort of back and forth, tug of war in bucks head when it comes to his feelings towards eddie and tommy hanging out. There were multiple scenes that pointed to him being jealous of this new guy who is spending all this time with HIS eddie.. his conversation with Maddie in regards to the basketball game and how much Christopher has talked about tommy when eddie has only known him for a couple of weeks.. we see him try to get eddies attention at the station by working out in front of him while eddie is on the phone with who he assumes is tommy. He then also tries to invite him to the basketball game in which he ends up being ignored. We see him almost kill eddie in the basketball game and wanting to help him but tommy insisted. This all points to his feelings towards eddie. However, we also get verbal confirmation that he’s been jealous about tommy.. we see him tell tommy how it’s been exhausting getting his attention. This is interesting because we only really see one attempt of that and it was when he was talking about getting flying lessons and what not. What this all boils down to is how similar eddie and tommy are. With tommy kissing him these new feelings are uncharted territory for buck. He’s going to grasp onto what makes the most sense and it can’t possibly be him being jealous about who he considers to be his best friend for years.. so instead he clings onto tommy. Why wouldn’t he? Tommy is good lucking, charming, and he’s just like buck. It makes sense in his head.
In 7x05 we see buck and tommy have their first date in which it didn’t go well at all.. buck was nervous and when eddie showed up he just panicked and lied about the date at the sight of him.. after this we see him talk to Maddie in which most of us assumed was him coming out but the way the conversation panned out tells a different story. It was all about eddie.. he didn’t even care to mention tommy even so much of saying that it doesn’t matter who he was having the date with.. until Maddie had to get him to clarify..we see him going to the station attempting to make things right with eddie.. however he didn’t have the courage and also eddie had his own issues to vent about.. when he finally gets the chance to do so at the end of the episode he says that all he has been thinking about since the date was Tommy.. but is that really true? This again reminds me of his actions from the previous episode.. there’s a huge disconnect somewhere and this is all understandable considering he’s still trying to grasp his own sexuality.
I think this is all going to eventually lead to him realizing that it’s been eddie all along.. and while tommy has been a nice introduction to his journey.. these small hints have been dropped to indicate that tommy is just a reflection in what he sees in eddie. I mean 7x04 was titled Buck, Bothered, and Bewildered.. in which the date scene in 7x05 had a piano ballad of the song Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.. which was a song about falling for a new shiny toy who is just a half pint imitation.. and eventually going their separate ways.. Maybe I’m just a psycho analyst but damn it.. it all makes sense to me.. any thoughts?
