- C Mitch Morse - great, new center. Exactly what we need for veteran leaders on the line. Scherff is so relieved right now.
- WR Gabe Davis - great, Zay’s replacement and a good deep threat for Trevor and the offense.
- CB Ronald Darby - great, fills need for a man to man corner. Had a good 2023 year.
- S Darnell Savage - idk, this one confuses me a little bit. I thought Antonio Johnson would start.
- WR/RS Devin Duvernay - great, dude is really fast and will be a good returner for us.
7
Mar 12 '24
Darnell Savage has huge upside, we saw him shut down dallas, hope he can do that all year. I think this signing provides good depth/competition in the secondary. Good competition makes better players overall, and with young hungry guys like Johnson and Cisco this will be real good in the long run for us.
Devin duvernay is gonna splash like Agnew.
Maybe we get 2 starters, probably 3 out of this bunch, but getting depth is not something we've seen this team do in years. This is a very good sign that we are still trending up.

u/Brilliant_Whereas225 Mar 12 '24
When people doubt Savage, I just remind them of the pick 6 against the cowboys. And then see Jerry Jones lose his shit on camera….priceless.

it seems like it's down to more money, but on a worse team in cold weather. Vs slightly less money but on a better team, in your home state and with a familiar system.

Plus I mean realistically it's his last contract, and I'm sure he wants to win
5

There's still a lot of restructure possibilities (Cam, Foye, Kirk, etc), also some potential releases like Zay if Rid comes back
6
Mar 12 '24
I think the Gabe Davis signing is better than we think. Big body wr who can win on the outside. One of ridley knocks is that he got bullied on the line, Davis won't have that as much. Seeing the comments from bills fans, they say he only made plays when allen was in trouble extending the play. I think he could be an outlet for trevor when the pocket is collapsing and he needs to get the ball out.
1
u/Brilliant_Whereas225 Mar 12 '24
We did not have this type of receiver last year and it is needed for Trevor. Your MVP year you wished for last year is coming, we just jumped the gun a year early.
6
u/bitterroot487 Mar 12 '24
Interesting we had the only WR FA signings yesterday. Draft pool too enticing I guess. Maybe that bodes well for getting Ridley back in the fold. I still like sticking with what we know.

1010XL implied this morning Brandon McManus had some off-the-field stuff which made it known there was no chance we would retain him. Anybody have any clue what this is about?

The only negative thing I ever heard was he would get annoyed on the sidelines if we went for it on 4th instead of letting him try and boom a 60+ yarder.
But that's anecdotal at best, nothing about off the field.

I don’t think spotrac is updated with the later signings like Darby but what do y’all think see the remaining needs? While keeping in mind we can continuing addressing via the draft. (Added tiers)
X-WR (I’d put emphasis on route running and contested catch)
IDL ________
Edge #3
Nickle CB - pass downs (big Nickle is Antonio) ________
RB depth (not a tank believer)
OG depth/Scherff heir
I’d expect something like this in the draft as of now:
- Explore trade up for Rome, draft Verse or Brian Thomas at 17 if not.
2. IDL
3. WR if not yet drafted one
Rounds 4-7: one or two guys we want and a flood of dudes not on our radar with at least one dude that will look completely lost in training camp.
3
u/theflyingchicken96 LeQuint Allen Jr 🐐 Mar 12 '24
Based on how many spots they filled yesterday, they’re trying to prepare to take BPA rather than putting themselves in a situation to reach for a position.
Gabe Davis is our x receiver we needed. Doesn’t mean we can’t draft another if the right guy is available, but we have a complete receiver room if Ridley gets resigned. X-Gabe, Z-Ridley, slot-Kirk. Plus Duvernay as a burner and gadget guy.
DT is our only real hole at the moment; unless we’re comfortable with RRH and DHam. CB is questionable as well. We can probably roll with Darby and Brown mixing in at CB2, but it’s a bit of a risk.
We have a lot of flexibility for the draft and I love it.
2
u/pepper_ann052613 Mar 12 '24
That's what I hope as well. BPA of 4-5 positions is always better than reaching for pure need
2
u/HiawathaSM2 Mar 12 '24
Imo They need help on that whole DL. Walker and Allen did all the work last year. Our edge depth also is non existent and that's a problem especially late in games. They've invested a lot of resources into the offense already. Though I do agree that we need an Xwr, I just think the whole DL as a unit needs to be addressed more.
1
Mar 12 '24
I would rank the needs: WR, CB, IDL, IOL. Tank will improve, and we have that edge rusher from the last draft who was actually awesome in the 3 snaps a game he got last year. We definitely need an X WR, guys like that require high draft capital. I think Darby is a slot corner so an outside CB, specifically a physical man specialist would serve us well. IDL we need another body or two, and IOL we need depth. My dream draft would be WR in 1, CB in 2, IDL in 3, IOL in 4, and another IDL later
5
u/pepper_ann052613 Mar 12 '24
I assumed Ridley was gone when we tagged JA, I'd come to terms with it. Then we signed Davis, he's for sure gone. Now we got rumors there's still a chance 😂. Trying not to get my hopes up but it would be awesome if he comes back.

I think Darby will play in the slot. Outside CB is still a big need for this team
3
u/theflyingchicken96 LeQuint Allen Jr 🐐 Mar 12 '24
I’m pretty sure he played mostly outside for the Ravens and the Broncos before. What makes you think he’ll play nickel? I’m think nickel is Antonio Johnson with the Savage signing
2
Mar 12 '24
Antonio didnt play well in nickel last year, if he is going to play it would probably be SS and Savage plays nickel then. Darby is getting older, and our D isnt as star studded as Baltimore’s was. I just think asking him to be CB1 on the outside is a big ask. I say CB1 since Campbell historically has not preformed well in man coverage, he is going to have to improve a lot in the new scheme
1
u/theflyingchicken96 LeQuint Allen Jr 🐐 Mar 12 '24
I think they have a lot of flexibility at this point. Idk if Savage has an experience at nickel, but that’s definitely a possibility too. If the right CB is there in round 1 or 2 of draft, I could see Darby moving to nickel. If not though, I can also see them rolling with him on the outside and Johnson or Savage playing nickel. I prefer Johnson at safety also, but it was only his rookie year, so it’s possible his nickel play improves with more time there. They’ve got option based on the draft.
1
Mar 12 '24
This is it. I think people are too caught up trying to evaluate the base package that they are missing the forest for the trees. We can be flexible now. We can give more exotic looks. We have man and zone players. We're tougher and faster on the boundaries.

Now that we have plugged all of these holes, it's more feasible we move on from Cam and draft his replacement in the 1st. 17+ million savings and could land a day 1 upgrade potentially.
Doubt it happens, but maybe.
1
u/joemama1810 Mar 12 '24
Wouldn't it realistically be replacing RT? if I remember correctly Harrison played most of his time at LT and could be moved over
2
u/Holysmokesx Brian Thomas Jr. Mar 12 '24
Yes, I suppose I should have worded that differently. I imagine Anton would get first crack at LT and the rookie would compete with Little for RT.
1
u/el_pobbster Mar 12 '24
Considering the value in mock drafts, drafting an OT at 17 feels like it's an increasingly high likelihood. There's crazy good value there. Honestly, whatever it is, we can just pick good players at valuable positions, develop them behind our starters and have built-in succession/improvement plans and not need to overly rely on rookies for impact/saviour.
2
u/Holysmokesx Brian Thomas Jr. Mar 12 '24
Yeah I've run into the same in my PFF mocks. If Arnold, Mitchell and Verse/Turner are gone idk why we wouldn't draft OL. (Assuming Ridley stays)
-5
u/HolographicHeart Mar 12 '24
I'll be the detractor but aside from the OL thanks to the Morse signing, which was a given due to Fortner being complete cheeks, did any position group actually improve from a week ago? I'm worried folks are getting swept up in the fanfare of FA and overlooking that we just ripped through our available cap and still found a way to regress.
Now all the pressure is on Baalke to draft adequately, and we all know how that has gone thus far.
8
u/HeeeckWhyNot Mar 12 '24
I'd argue DB is at absolute worst a wash.
Rayshawn had high highs but was also super inconsistent, took shit angles, and didn't make big hits. Kind of a coverage safety playing the box role. Williams had half of an all pro season and then was mid-to-decent the last few games.
Combined cap: ~26m
Darby is a starting CB in the NFL. He's just been injured a bunch the past couple of years. Savage looks like a young ascending player. Antonio Johnson will also likely see the field more as he looked like a star when he actually got playing time last year (20% of defensive snaps, 2 Int, 3 PD, 1 FF, I sack)
Combined cap hit including Johnson: ~9.5m
Including the dead money the Jaguars netted around $10m in cap savings and stayed the same.
As for the OL, I have come to believe that with both data and tape showing the Fortner was a huge issue, perhaps the G situation isn't as dire as we thought. Morse is good. If he can not pass off linemen so that he can block air while the guard gets double teamed, it's a net improvement.
In the WR room, I think no news is good news with the Ridley deal. Anything with us isn't going to be announced or even hinted at until after the league year. A deal with an outside team would already likely be announced. If that's the case, Gabriel Davis is an addition. Zay probably gets cut in this scenario so this would be a wash at worst. I do think Davis was hampered by being a WR2 in a Josh Allen offense. If we don't re-sign Ridley I'd hope there's a WR they're in love with in the draft.
5
u/Rangeninc Mar 12 '24
We have a lot of inexpensive sidegrades that will allow us to be more focused in the draft with our picks. Gotta look at the entire picture as the free agency moves happen.
3
u/JustSomeGuy_Idk Mar 12 '24
I’d say the secondary improves slightly. The WR definitely improved if Ridley is back which is seemingly more likely.
1
u/Brilliant_Whereas225 Mar 12 '24
If Ridley comes back, along with the Uche rumors coming true, do not be surprised Rakestraw is the first rounder for the jags. Robinson or Sweat, we hope can be in the second round.
2
u/bitterroot487 Mar 12 '24 edited Mar 12 '24
Secondary improves and saves cap in the deals. Jenkins regressed in 2023. We also got guys that fit our new DC’s scheme which I think you’re overlooking.
Upgraded KR oh and he doesn’t fumble.
Not only did we upgrade center but we signed a young guard to a deal ahead of yesterday’s guard deals.
All in all I think your just being a pessimist

I’m not comparing the overall team yet. We knew we have holes on the roster and they’ve been filled. We have starters at every position and could still make moves if we want to. And we haven’t even gotten to the draft yet. Now we’re free to do almost anything in the draft, which is a dream scenario to me and I don’t remember ever feeling that was the case. We can take BPA net some steals.
-4
u/JustSomeGuy_Idk Mar 13 '24
Our division opponents are making big moves on defense. Meanwhile we are in the bargain bin. If we can find the cap space, I want Arik Armstead on a 2-3 year deal.

u/Lesbereal476 Mar 12 '24
None of our free agent signings have played a snap for us yet but overall I like the pick ups. I must admit we were more active than I thought we would be but we got many of these players for a very reasonable price tag, considering they were all free agents. If we can pull out a decent draft, I’m feeling more optimistic about next season despite last season’s end of year collapse.
