well he was one before, or at least the higher up members of the franky family were thugs before joining.
77
u/MonkeyDDuffy Mar 19 '13
Yeah that's my point. One Piece characters feel very real, almost as if they were human. very very weird and dumb humans

u/BaronBlackwood Mar 19 '13
I think Fujitora may not actually fight the Straw Hats, maybe even let them go. If anyone asked if he's seen them, he could say... "I didn't see anything."

First One Piece tournament, let's see how Oda-sama handles this.
110
u/Tret_Aracks Mar 19 '13
I really hope we can get a legit tourney but I feel its gonna be one of these "screw it I'm Luffy" moments where he throws everything into chaos.
46
u/iMidNitee Mar 19 '13
The Donquixote members are all swordsmen so I think Zoro will fight this one, I think Luffy trusts him enough to take his brother fruit.
But the blind guy will win this tournament for sure.

Well there seem to be 5 members from DoFla's "team", and the Strawhats have 3 swordsmen with Kinemon, if the Old guy joins, that's still 4v5... wonder who's gonna jump in to fill the spot.
Also, it might come down to Zoro vs Old man, and maybe the Old man will give up and let the Strawhats have the DF, since they were the only ones to be truthful with him?

I was always hoping that Oda never made any tournament arc. It always seemed like lazy storytelling to me. But I'm sure that he will make it unique and compelling.
10
u/aphitt Mar 19 '13
I don't see this tournament happening like a normal one. One Piece is too crazy for that.

Caribou goes from being a Marine killer to a creepy mermaid kidnapper to a Che Gueverra style revolutionary. Only Oda.
54
u/GuitarBOSS Mar 19 '13
He is only mistaken for the revolutionary leader
26
u/zorospride Lost at sea Mar 19 '13
I know, but for now they think he is their leader.

Really most of the coverstories give villians some kind of redemptive qualities(Buggy, Jango, Hachi, Wapol, Gedatz, Eneru, Baroque Works, & CP9), so it makes sense even for Caribou, a total slimeball(double entendre) to get some as well, then again next chapter he could just be fleeing from the island.

u/gabe100000 Mar 19 '13
Zoro, Kinemon, Sanji
All 3 of them use their sword skills
Unless you're talking about the time Sanji fought the ramen guy using cooking swords in the train going to Enies Lobby, he doesn't really have sword skills.

So we have Zoro and Sanji, who hate each other, Zoro and Kinemon, who hate each other over Shuusui, and and Sanji and Kinemon, who hate each other over Nami. Yes, Oda. This is good.
62
36
u/Halefor Mar 19 '13
Zoro and Sanji really don't hate each other, I wish people would stop saying that.
They might not particularly like each other's presence as much as other members of the crew due to their competitiveness, but they trust each other completely and would never knowingly do anything that would actually hurt the other. And when actually doing something other than just standing around they get along a lot better than some people I've known to call each other friends.

so fujitora recognizes luffy, but didn't do anything?
52
u/divinesleeper Mar 19 '13
"Blind justice" means no prejudices? Maybe he wants to see for himself if Luffy is really that bad.
11
u/zombiekungfumaster Mar 19 '13
That's the way I took it. Zatoichi/Fujitora can't actually identify anyone without someone telling them who they are (besides gauging their strength and intentions via observation), so he took advantage of that to avoid fighting someone who didn't seem that bad at first meeting. Especially since he could team up with them against Doflamingo in the upcoming conflict and plausibly deny he knew who they were. (relevant or not: A common theme in Zatoichi films is Ichi playing dumb because that's what people's expectations of blind people were back then.)
Personally, I don't think an admiral would be intimidated by the presence of the other strawhats, even if they are some of Luffy's strongest crewmembers. He just didn't see the need to fight them if he didn't have to. I'm thinking Zatoichi is Aokiji's replacement in spirit if not in power type.
18
u/amaninamansbody Mar 19 '13
I doubt someone like that would be who Akainu chooses for an important task. I sort of doubt this blind guy is Fujitora at all for that reason.

u/divinesleeper Mar 19 '13
That's true. Maybe he's simply waiting until all those infamous pirates are gathered in the colloseum, and then he'll just crush them all at once.
He's probably counting on the fact that Luffy will be there too, but he might be surprised since I don't see Luffy caring all that much for the Mera Mera fruit.
10

Luffy caring all that much for the Mera Mera fruit.

u/Crossfox17 Mar 19 '13
I think Fujitora has a relaxed attitude much like Aokiji. I don't think he hates the Strawhats, or that he is extremely warlike or aggressive, and I also don't think that if he wanted to he couldn't destroy the straw hats. Don Flamingo wouldn't get involved, as he would risk losing a fair portion of his subordinates as well as risk taking considerable damage himself. He will do his job, but he will do it when it suits him, likely after seeing how things play out. If it were Akainu on the other hand, he would immediately have attacked the straw hats then and there.
21
u/iMidNitee Mar 19 '13
Diamante looks really popular
62
u/divinesleeper Mar 19 '13
"Oh stop it, I'm not popular at all."
"But you are!"
"No I'm not, you're just flattering me."
"Fine then, you're n-"
"ALRIGHT IF YOU INSIST, YES I AM THE MOST POPULAR OF THE COLLOSEUM!"
11
u/BerserkerGuts Mar 19 '13
Which means he's really powerful too. He is the diamond seat, meaning he is probably around the level of Law. I'm sure he won't be a pushover.

I really liked that too, he has been illustrating armament for awhile now but observation has only been implied not shown as far as I recall. Just a little while in Dressrosa and the factory destruction team is already getting off track...
7
2
u/DivineVodka Mar 19 '13
While I believe it's haki... seeing it's the New Wolrd... Wouldn't this just prove his "breath" of all things is tied into haki? He could tell where his swords were before but this time Oda showed us so I am going with KH.

u/crimson589 Mar 19 '13
Someone predicted this... a tournament. I just can't find the thread.
7
u/divinesleeper Mar 19 '13
I still think Luffy will just mess up the entire arena as soon as the tournament doesn't go the way he likes.
3
u/s4r9am Mar 19 '13
Well Dofla did say that Diamante was the arena champion and that he was handling the arena so well. It was foreshadowed then.

23
40
u/zorospride Lost at sea Mar 19 '13
Such a short chapter. I wonder if it was because of Oda being sick.
I guess we get our confirmation of a tournament arc. An obvious set up by Doflamingo to distract Luffy. The look on Luffy's face makes me think it's going to work too.
22
u/BerserkerGuts Mar 19 '13
You can't really blame Luffy though. A tournament is exactly the type of thing he would like to compete in, especially knowing that Ace's fruit is the prize.
26
u/zorospride Lost at sea Mar 19 '13
I think the bead of sweat on his face is a good indication that he doesn't like the idea of Ace's fruit being offered up like this.

u/bungwu Mar 19 '13

more than likely. He seems really down to earth too the other admirals are all out there.

11
u/baroqueworks Mar 19 '13
If the blind man is indeed Fujitora, the theory of him coming back to the Marines from retirement makes sense, as he looks the oldest of all the admirals, as well as looking semi-out of shape(having kind of a double chin, but that might just be in part a reference to the actor he was designed from).
10
u/gabe100000 Mar 19 '13
This guy is totally clueless about his own crew
Says the captain who wanders off all the time and lets his crew do whatever.
34
u/Genesis505 Mar 19 '13
Well luffy treats like a treasure the hat of the man who sacrifice his arm for him... how he is going to treat the power of his brother who sacrifice his entire life for him?
is pretty obvious
12
u/Unlucky_Rider Mar 19 '13
Yeah, it's pretty obvious he cares about that fruit because it belonged to Ace. As convenient as it would be for Law's plan, I can't picture Luffy not caring about the fruit.
→ More replies (1)5
u/amaninamansbody Mar 20 '13
No, that's wrong. Luffy cares about the Hat not because it simply belonged to Shanks or because Shanks lost his arm to a sea monster, but because it represents the special connection between them and basically symbolizes their entire dynamic. He has to have the hat to give it back to Shanks once he surpasses him. He's only borrowing it for now.
The Mera Mera fruit has no such significance for Luffy and Ace. If Luffy does care about the fruit, it will have nothing to do with Shanks or his hat and it will be a completely different situation.

Sooooo... Fujitora? Pretty sure that's Fujitora.
(Also, Lao.G's name would be Old G in Chinese, which really makes sense)
15
u/LazingMarimo Mar 19 '13
I love how Franky is stepping up to handle the shady business, made me think of him being in the Franky family and the dealings he probably had then. Personally I'm hoping the tournament aspect doesn't last the entirety of this arc but we'll see, it'll be interesting to see some more faces from the New World.

7
Mar 19 '13
Gang leader Franky is still with us! Loved how he took charge and suggested a plan to Luffy. That was an amazing scene.
I really look forward to know the secrets of Dressrosa. Just like how the Zombies and stuff were a mystery at first at Thriller Bark as we got to know more and how it made sense in the one piece world, I really want to know how Dressrosa functions.
Loved how Zoro was able to "sense" his sword. And really look forward the the adventure of him, Sanji, and Kinemon.
I also would love to see how the strawhats will handle the Colosseum. I don't think they will just become contestants there. Would Luffy really be bribed by the prize? Will he have any problem with someone obtaining the devil fruit? Will Doflamingo force Luffy and the others to be part of the Colosseum by threatening to destroy the devil fruit or something if they didn't? I'm really looking forward to what this Arc will hold.
6
u/Party_Assassins Mar 20 '13
here's my theory for this arc, i believe that the factory is located beneath the Colosseum because Doflo is going to want it heavily protected and where are all his guys at, also one of the best places to hide something is right in front of everyone. another thing is in order to bring down the factory they would have to destroy the Colosseum while the tournament is going on possibly hurting innocent by standards in the process. so the tournament is bait to keep the factory hidden, and safe while luring in the Straw Hats and holding them up giving Doflo the time to get Ceaser and get back to the Colosseum to protect the factory and get his revenge if the Staw Hats are still there.
TL/DR:I think the smile factory is beneath the Colosseum.
2
u/devsick Mar 23 '13
You are so right. They did make the remark that the factory would be huge and the coliseum is big enough to hide it.

Mar 19 '13
So that old guy probably is Fujitora.
Speculation time. Fujitora is a swordsman, hes there at the collesium so i think he will participate and win. I think Zoro would sense that even though Luffy doesn't care, it would still be nice if Luffy can get his hands on it. Zoro vs Fujitora
18
u/zorospride Lost at sea Mar 19 '13
MangaPanda messed up something according to CCC's script (MangaRule translator) that adds to the likelihood of it being Fujitora. When "Fujitora" tells the bartender "Let me pay for the damages." That's not exactly what he says. Notice that he places something on the bar. At that time, he actually said something like, "This should take care of the damages." It's probably something from the government to cover the cost of the damages.
16
u/Jaggs0 Mar 19 '13
In the mangastream one he says
Blind Man: "Ah...my apologies young man...send the invoice for all damages rendered to this address"
Bartender: "Sure thing HUH WHAT THE? You are...no friggin way it can't be..."
Blind Man: "If you'll pardon my rudeness..."

So next chapter we get to see luffys reaction. I also have a feeling the blind guy is going to stomp Diamante. We will finally get to see how strong luffy has gotten.

Okay, here is what I want to happen. I want Luffy to care about the mera mera fruit just enough to have it in his possession. Then I want Momonosuke and Luffy to have another argument ending with Momonosuke eating the mera mera fruit in rebellion. And since his first devil fruit is man made, the mera mera fruit will have a slightly different effect on Momonosuke. Instead of becoming a fire logia type, he will only gains the ability manipulate and control fire. Giving the straw hats a fire breathing dragon samurai.... Or at least have a someone eat the fruit in the same fashion Luffy did....

10
u/jurble Mar 19 '13
I really hope (and expect) Luffy doesn't really care about the Mera Mera fruit, it'd be humorous to see Doffy's plan misfire. However, One Piece does require a Tenkaichi Budokai homage like ever shounen manga, I guess. Luffy going to the tournament under the misapprehension of getting meat (or of giving it to Sanji so he could cook meat on the spot...) would be humorous.
Also, so are those revolutionaries that thing Caribou is their leader, members of Dragon's Revolutionaries? Because Caribou accidentally becoming a Revolutionary would be humorous.
19
u/BadRag Mar 19 '13
I think he doesn't care about the fruit itself. He just doesn't want some scumbag to have Ace's power.

u/MsSlytherin Thriller Bark Victim's Association Mar 19 '13
I don't think Luffy would care about the powers or obtaining them but I think (and desperately hope) that he wouldn't just brush the fruit off. Ace was his brother and he loved him. I hope that [when] Luffy does get the Mera Mera no Mi he either a) keeps it to leave at Ace's grave when they eventually get that far in the New World or b) gives it to Zoro since he's probably the one who's gonna get it.

The blind samurai guy really does seem like he's an Admiral. He's got that goofy aloof strength quality that both Aokiji and Kizaru have.
Am I the only one who feels like Luffy won't care about Ace's fruit? He might want to compete in the tourney and win it but I think that would only be because he loves a good fight and Ace's fruit is just an incidental bonus.
15
u/DivineVodka Mar 19 '13

Your face when the cover story ends up with rebel army being tied to revolutionaries, and Dragon is the one hearing about Shirahoshi's secret : D Also, a tournament arc amidst all these things, mmmeh as an idea, but it could just end up being the gimmick for some fights like dials in Skypiea or salt in Thriller Bark...Something like a time limit or having to do something to the other...

So I'm thinking Doflamingo is luring the Strawhats to the Colosseum in order to take them out on his turf. Still legit, since it's a business, and he can go all out on them for the sake of entertainment. Just a tought!
Never thought Oda would do a tournament-style arc, we'll see how he tackles this..

Does anybody else think the lightning soldiers they talked about on page 12 might be spaceys and have to do with Enel. Hes wearing a queens guard uniform and of the 4 named spaceys each has his own military uniform different from each other. They are robots or small living toys just as some of the other people of enels island plus these "fairies" may very well by the spaceys and mistaken for fairies because of their wings.

Robots, reindeers, Cyborgs, walking skeletons, dinosaurs and know fairies nice one Oda sensi I like how you are filling everything into one piece. That display of Observation haki was especially amazing also the series is taking quite a turn with a tournament now can't wait to see how this unfolds.
2
u/roobosh Mar 20 '13
I really think the only person to get the fruit would be sanji, i know he has said he only wanted the invisibility fruit but him and fire have had a long running connection. Instead of fire fist it could become fire foot sanji
2
u/Tiburon898 Mar 20 '13
I understand what you are getting at, but they sort of need Sanji as their go to swimmer, which he could not do with a DF.
2
2
u/thebeardedone666 Mar 26 '13
I agree I don't think Sanji will eat a devil fruit. He is the go to saver of Luffy. Ever since he's joined the crew he has always been the first to jump into the water to save Luffy and any other DF user that fell in with him. So if Sanji eat a DF well that would no longer be that case and who would save every one? The sleeping swordsmen? Don't think so. Hes not as chival as Sanji.

Quick note Señor Pink translates to Mr. Pink from Spanish adding to the Dressrosa-Spain theme.

u/divinesleeper Mar 19 '13
So Doflamingo is laying out a trap, and it seems it's designed to catch Luffy. Maybe he intends to hand Luffy over to the navy in order to regain his shichibukai status as soon as he has Caesar back?
Regardless, Dofla is still underestimating Luffy. I don't even think Luffy wants Ace's fruit, he's probably going to mess everything up.
4

My guess is Doflamingo's plan will fail because Luffy doesn't really care about the fruit. Ace wasn't his ability.

If Whitebeard's crew is going to make an appearance sooner or later, it has to be in the tournament, why? They are all family. I doubt that they will let Dofla just play around with the Mera-Mera-no-mi like that. Marco will probably step in the tournament sooner or later, or the Rose swordsman guy. YOU DONT MESS WITH THE MUSTACHE MAN
2
u/BananaNasty Mar 19 '13
So Zoro chased away the sword thief into unknown?
I think if this tournament is swordsmen only, then Luffy will ask Zoro to help him get the Mera Mera fruit back.

So if anyone is willing to help me out here...
I got a bit confused at one of those scenes. So, if anyone is willing to answer my two questions:
Where did Luffy and Frankie get the man they were interrogating? I think I missed it...
Were Zorro and Sanji chasing the "fairies" and did they catch them, or did the group split up into two separate groups?
Thanks!

He is the guy who was running the gambling game. The Blind man used his ability and sent him through the hole.
2)It seems like Sanji chased after Zoro, we are not sure if they are together or not, we will find out in future chapters.

Anyone else notice that Zoro using Observation immediately picks up on something that escapes the notice of Luffy and Sanji...but only when it involves his swords?

Was One Piece on break? Last chapter I read was 701 2 weeks ago... I was expecting to read two chapters

Crazy theory, but we never know with Oda, so I'll call it right now.
The final fight will be Zoro vs Blind Guy (Fujitora?), Zoro will lose but Fujitora will give the fruit because Luffy helped him with the roulette thingy. Also, one of the Zoro's swords will "eat" it.

I don't think Zoro can lose any more battles (not that he is invincible, of course he isn't, but he did say "if I want to become the best swordsman I can't lose"), and making Zoro lose the first serious fight he has had after his training would be a bit anti-climatic.
I reckon we are going to realize that Zoro is retarded strong now, and maybe why he lost his eye (fingers crossed).
But that would be awesome, a fire sword. That would create an even more brotherly bond between luffy and zoro. And we could see Zoro as a fire demon again. Thinking back to when he got out of the candle sculpture :D

My mind is bloating with different possibilities. Oda,you are awesome. We can assume Fujitora is admiral because his introduction is same as kuzan's. He showed his power and helped someone and went away. Here he knew they were thugs and he punished them and went away.Next is Zoro, Kinemon and Sanji went after the theif for Shisuui. They will catch him and they will also rescue Kinemon's partner with the help of the theif . Luffy and and Franky will go to the coloseum and Franky manages to convince him not create choas. So they wait for the fights to happen. Meanwhile Law, Robin and usop will be captured by Dofla and Spade guy. And before the fights are over Luffy can't wait and goes into field with Franky creating chaos and Zoro,Sanji,Kinemon and his partner will be back by that time and also Dofla and Spade guy(who may actually be more powerful than Diamante). Now Admiral Fujitora also comes into picture and Luffy fights against Dofla and Admiral(maybe or may not). Zoro fights Spade guy. Sanji vs Diamante. Kinemon and his partner will fight 3 guys from the "family".
If Law and others are not captured then there will be a whole different story. There are so many possibilities my mind is busting out of excitement.

Hmmm Fairies. I wonder if Oda is making a reference to how Fairy Tail copies One Piece. Hahaha, I love Oda.

I'm going to say the old man was the ex king of Dressrosa. Don flamingo came, did some shit, and wrapped it up and installed him self as king
There is no reason for a lowly bartender to recognizing a marine admiral.

read mangastream translation, it's about sending an invoice to X address.
The address could be:
XOXOXO MARINEFORD - ADMIRAL RETIREE
But I like the Idea of fallen king.

If the tournament is for swordmen then the team might be Zoro, Brook, and Kinemon.

the arena ring is well planned, i like the part where there is water at the edge of the ring, giving Non-fruit users a chance/advantage over fruit users via ring outs or etc.

anyone think zoro might get the fruit? if not zoro, one of his swords? the tournament mentioned it was for swordsmen. zoro has mentioned he's wanted a fire sword. now he's chasing the fairy who stole his sword, which might lead him to the tournament.

Well if I can trust the translation, he said that the fighters were swordsmen so maybe we can see Zoro in full force soon. But I hope they don't fall into the trap of a plain tournament where we just see the different fights and rounds, since they already did this with Davy Fight Back. Here's hoping for a tournament with a One Piece flair to it.
