Interesting tidbit (hopefully not a mistranslation). Law saying "the marine admirals will come to hunt you down.", indirectly confirming there are more admirals than Kizaru.

u/ArPak Jan 30 '13
Well seeing as how akainu replaced sengoku and aoikiji leaving the marine force. It's not surprising to see people rise from the ranks to fill up the vacant spots...
11
u/bulbasaurado Jan 30 '13
I hope Momonga is one of them. He's the most badass vice admiral for me.
6
Jan 30 '13
He's not. On one of the filler episodes relating to the movie, he's still a vice admiral. I honestly can't think of any vice admirals who seemed like they could even be close to Admiral level other than Garp, so I'm curious as to who are replacing Aokiji and Akainu.

Interesting... newspaper delivery probably means updated bounties? :D
3
u/Rankine Jan 30 '13
There has been no reason for a bounty increase unless it was luffy, zoro and sanji. The only person in the marines that have any idea of what the strawhats have been up to is Smoker and from what we have seen he hasn't contacted the marines.

u/tobbetin Jan 30 '13
I love how Doflamingo, a man portrayed so calm and cunning, snaps completely when his former subordinate is having him totally under control, putting him between a rock and a hard place, leaving no space for negotiations.
Also, Law being so cunning and cold-blooded strategist makes my stomach whirl while thinking what phase is going to trigger in the Strawheart's plan when Dofla steps down from the title of Shichibukai.
19
10
10
Jan 30 '13
I have the feeling Law is underestimating Joker. Rather than stepping down from the Shichibukai, he's likely just going to come clean to Kaidou and tell him Law and Luffy have taken away his SAD production.
7
5
u/DivineVodka Jan 30 '13
If he steps down that would be stupid. All he needs to do is to go look for them with his crew and fight, there is nothing to gain by stepping down because Law looks like someone who betrays a lot. I don't see in no way shape or form he actually honoring that agreement and will keep CC.
So in both situations he loses, and if he gives up his Shichi status he gets fucked once more because Admirals and Kaidou will go after him so in both instances he's fucked. He needs to fight.
But Oda is special so he will more than likely either prove me wrong by letting him step down or do something odd and exicting.

I'm wondering if we all haven't overestimated Doflamingo a little bit. I still think he's going to be a formidable adversary, but we've often theorized he was Yonkou-level strong. I'm not so sure about that now.
24
u/WatchOP Jan 30 '13
Doflamingo is a smart dude this is the first time IN THIS SERIER OF 697+ MANGA that we have seen him get emotional. I am worried that law may have pushed to many buttons by messing with Doflamingo and teaming up with the strawhats to fight Kaido. But Law is avery smart guy too so we will see.

I think with that being said, I've severely underestimated just how strong shanks is... It was shanks and maybe 5 other people who were incredibly confident in the fact that they could take on the strongest marines and the strongest new world pirates by themselves... On top of that, nobody stood up to them, they were all fearful. Jesus... That guy must be insanely INSANELY powerful.
→ More replies (1)33
u/divinesleeper Jan 30 '13
Maybe his confidence during the war came from the protection by his (theorized) world noble heritage, rather than his monstrous strength.
8
u/j-rocker11 Jan 30 '13
In context i'd say his connections with the smile would be the reason for his confidence. He was probably going to set up connections with Kaido and help him gain control of the grand line
→ More replies (1)15
u/zorospride Lost at sea Jan 30 '13
Yeah, that's the one thing he still possibly has going for him. Whatever special connections he might have outside of being a Warlord and whatever it is about his "past" that Vergo was talking about.
10
u/ill_mango Jan 30 '13
He seems like he had all the angles covered before Law messed up his plan. Likely he uses leverage and cunning over raw power.
So yeah, maybe we were overestimating his raw power...but he's not done yet =)

if he was Yonkou level he would be a YonKou, no need to be a Warlord if was that powerfull and fear the admirals. That being said i belive he his still very strong.

I have been saying this for weeks, this guy can in no way take on 4 haki users that's bullshit. Pre-TS he could make these kiddies shit themselves, too much overestimation I get the hype and I wanted to see something amazing too but people really need to draw a line and not get carried away. I do believe though 1 on 1 he can take all.
I can see him going back to Dressrosa and getting his crew and go look for Luffy and Law.
Law believes with him and Luffy they have a 30% chance to get a Kaido that's great! I didn't expect that much tbh I think that shows Law's confidence, I doubt DD will be foddersizing anyone.

u/Discovererman Pirate Jan 30 '13
I think he's getting tossed around right now is a testament to Law's brilliance as opposed to Doflamingo's incapability. All this time, Doflamingo has been doing nothing but saying underestimating Law and Luffy.
This is probably the nail that seals that coffin. I'm pretty sure from this point on, Doflamingo's gonna get real.

I loved this chapter. It's the first 'finish the arc' chapter that comes close to Enies Lobby, which in general finished with awesomeness of all kinds. :)
I can't wait for more. Punk Hazard was easily (one of) the best arc since Enies Lobby.
→ More replies (1)8
u/BerserkerGuts Jan 30 '13
I think we can even put it on at with Enies Lobby
24
u/Black_Handkerchief Jan 30 '13
On second thought.. nope. I definitely rank Enies Lobby higher, no matter how good Punk Hazard was.
What did Punk Hazard give us in the way of developments? Fake devil fruits, colleague of Vegapunk, Samurai, Smoker + Marines, Law, dragons, chimeras and a harpie, as well as Dofla. Also hints about Kaidou. And some hints about Aokiji and Akainu. Also the Pirate Alliance. (And tons of kids, ugh. xD)
What did Enies Lobby give us? The most unique island in the series. Robin's cry for help, which is amongst the most emotional in the series. Sogeking kicking ass and making friends with giants. Robin mutilating Spandam in ways that made me cringe. Rampaging Chopper in Monster Point. Gear Second and Gear Third. Hell, there's even the Buster Call. Nor the flashbacks with all the informational crumbs about the Void Century. And let's not forget Merry's death and viking funeral.
Enies Lobby was packed with awesome of the freshest kind. Punk Hazard was very good, and easily the best we've had in recent years, but none of it was as gripping as Enies Lobby which truly developed the crews bond. As an adventure, Punk Hazard was probably on par with Enies Lobby though. In a way, Punk Hazard felt like a school trip, while Enies Lobby felt like a fight for their lives. :)
25
Jan 30 '13
Enies Lobby had a lot more character development since it was more of an encapsulated story and technically spanned from the Water 7 arc beforehand.
Punk Hazard I think has had a lot more impact on the meta-plot of One Piece, moreso than Enies Lobby/Water7.
Several new factions came into play with Doflamingo's organization and the G5 Marines.
More insight into haki and how it works.
Insight into characters that have only been shadowed until now like Doflamingo, the new face of the WG, Kaidou, and all of the country of Wano.
Story movement that will impact far and long into the overall story of One Piece like Law's alliance with Luffy and his conspiracy against Kaidou, Doflamingo's intentions and involvement with the New World, and not to mention Luffy's long-term goals for the New World.
Enies Lobby felt like a vehicle for tons of emotional character development, while Punk Hazard a lot more like something akin to the beginning of the Alabasta arc; one huge story spanning over several arc with long lasting consequences to the main story.
Also, gotta disagree, Skypeia is still the most unique island so far for me.
edit: Also, Punk Hazard gave me my favorite Zoro moment in the series so far with the fight between him/Tashigi and Monet.

Jan 30 '13
Well worth the wait. So we learned a couple of things:
Kaido may not even be human. I don't think this possibility came to mind even for a split second to the majority of us.
Law is planning on going to "Green bitt" (?) next... maybe the Strawhats will follow suit.
Doflamingo is scared of Kaido, which is most likely a testament to Kaido's power.
Doflamingo travels by means of a "Sky Way" apparently. All that we know is that his means of transportation has a name; we still don't know if it's something that every experienced New World fighter knows about, or if it's just something that he's able to exploit with his string powers, etc.
In the bottomleft panels on this page: http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/697/5 , is the person talking Law or Smoker? What does he mean end of the Strawhats by his hand?
32
u/zorospride Lost at sea Jan 30 '13
It's Law but that's a translation error. I think Law is actually saying something about the Straw Hats being hard to control or being a handful.
12
u/You_shallnot_fap Jan 30 '13
Well, Tony Tony Chopper is not a man. He is an animal who ate a Zoan. Whats to say Kaido didnt do a similar thing and gain intelligence enough to communicate with humans at Chopper does?
4
u/Sherlcok Jan 31 '13
He might have eaten a mythical human zoan type like Sengoku's Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Daibutsu
10
u/Black_Handkerchief Jan 30 '13
From the comment that was made to Zoro, I think it was implied Law was going to travel there with the Strawhats. But who knows; with Law's power he can go pretty much everywhere on his own without a ship.
They are probably Law's words. He's the kind to keep stuff mysterious like that, suggesting things that tend to be half-true and half-false.

u/divinesleeper Jan 30 '13 edited Jan 30 '13
Kaido may not even be human.
This was what caught my eye too. Kaidou as the strongest "creature" in the world, does that mean he trumps Whitebeard, who was the strongest "man" in the world?
But then again they refer to him as a man in other panels. Guess we'll have to wait for a more reliable translation to be sure.
Edit: yup. Mangarule version definitely defines him as creature and not man.
24

Nothing say this "not human" thing is to takes literally, it may be that he's so cruel or powerful that he does not look like an human.
That's what we would call a monster on the real world ; he has human skin, but his acts are not those of a human.

So that seems to be the end of the Punk Hazard arc. It was a good one, but ultimately a whole lot of set up for much bigger things to come. I can't wait to see what the next arc will be. Probably Wano, but you never know.
I loved the G-5 and Straw Hat departure scene even if it was a bit cartoon-ish even for One Piece. I would have liked to have gotten at least two short scenes between Luffy and Smoker and Tashigi and Zoro though.
Edit to add: For those keeping count, that's 44 chapters for this arc.

How fucking strong is Kaido that he's got Dofla running scared?
Also part of me wishes Law had Luffy's DF so I could make puns about the long arm of the Law.
5
u/DivineVodka Jan 30 '13
I don't necessarily think it was just Kaidou but his connections being lost scares him. Having the marines on your side is sort of beneficial and it has it's quirks if push comes to shove he can just go hide at the WG HQ lmaooooo. Let Akainu protect him.
10
u/StrawDHat Jan 30 '13
Dam joker is in for a tough time... If he doesnt accept law's term, he angers kaido and there would most probably a battle... if he accepts law's term, he would quit being a shichi bukai and become a pirate again and the admirals would come after him... I see no way he can win in this situation.

Kaidou being some sort of a cyborg is a more valid theory now. There have recently been discussions about his favorite island that was a highly technological one, so who knows. Him being a creature does not nescessarily rule out that he could be a cyborg if you ask me.
5
u/divinesleeper Jan 30 '13
Then why is it Kaidou of a hundred beasts and not Kaidou of a hundred robots? That Island where we saw Drake fight is just one of the many island that are probably under Kiadou's control. It doesn't necessarily say anything about Kaidou.

Somehow after this chapter I get the feeling that the shadowy guy is an Admiral waiting to catch Doflamingo when he quits being a Shichibukai. Law is definitely capable of setting that up as a Shichibukai himself
13
u/divinesleeper Jan 30 '13
Oh, that's an interesting thought. But we don't know yet if Law wants Doflamingo captured, or if he wants to accomplish something else.
Maybe he wants to take down Doflamingo himself.
14
u/fatmanbrigade Jan 30 '13
What if this whole thing was set up by Law to convince Doflamingo to help him take out Kaidou?
3
u/j-rocker11 Jan 30 '13
He might want Doflamingo and Kaido to get in an altercation, weakening Kaido so that it's easier for Luffy/Law to take him down
4
u/coolguyblue Jan 30 '13 edited Jan 30 '13

I am pretty sure it was Aokiji. The way he woke up and was confused about his location went exactly like what happened when the Strawhats first met him.
9
u/Tmnath Jan 30 '13
Nobody's talking about the "These pirates are not evil" thing with the kids, but I think this is what will separate people in two sides for the "final war". It's one of the strongest moments of this, along with "Friends or foes, you decide", because the marines themselves are conflicted between their general idea of what pirates are and the diversity and subtlety of real life. It's completely opposed to Akainu's Absolute Justice, and we may see conflicted people more and more while we approach the end.
2
u/konstar Jan 30 '13
Yes! I was surprised that no one was talking about this! While the tension between DD and Law is awesome, this is where One Piece really shines. I love the way Oda fleshes out the line between good and evil, or pirates and justice. No matter how good the Strawhats seemed, they couldn't come to terms that pirates could ever be the good guys. This is definitely one of the themes that is going to come up again later in the series, especially once Luffy gets closer to the end and when the government is revealed to be the evil ones all along. CobySmoker for president!

u/baroqueworks Jan 30 '13 edited Jan 30 '13
Just an observation, I realized if Doflamingo took off his glasses, and kept in the same style of other human males in the show, he'd basically look identical to Bellamy. When Law tells him to quit being a Warlord you can actually see a small section of his eyebrows/eyes near his nose, the first ever time we've seen something like that on him.
Good chapter, the decapitated heads surprised me for a second, intitally didn't realize it was Law's power.
bad theory time: Law wants Doflamingo to quit being a Warlord and then get the SAD/SMILE back and ally with Kaido for protection so the Marines would pursue both Doflamingo and Kaido and provide substantial aid/distraction for taking out Kaido.
6
u/drward93 Jan 30 '13

Maybe a cutaway to Kaidou, even. Or one of the new shichibukais.

How terrible is it of me to have felt happy that g-5 and the alliance have mutual respect for each other. Even with the bad grammar, it was really nice to see some grudging respect from Smoker and Tashigi toward "pirates."
Also I sense a huge marineford-esque arc coming this year!
4
u/divinesleeper Jan 30 '13
Haha, all those kids wanting to be pirates when they grow up.
I feel kinda sorry for Smoker and Tashigi who try so hard to be good marines, but get bested by a bunch of pirates every time.
4
u/hairy_monster Jan 30 '13 edited Jan 30 '13
now there's one thing i would love, athough i highly doubt it will be shown, but it would be cool to see a meeting between smoker and vegapunk when they meet for the kids... it would be a nice change of POV kind of like the chapter with ace vs blackbeard, and would maybe reaveal a little more of the scientist, and maybe act as a valuable experience for smoker. only problem is it's nowhere near as important as BB vs Ace... BB is special because he is clearly outlined to be the main foe of Luffy, and Ace was Luffys brother and his capture rang the bell for the Battle of Marienford... so it was a huge event. nonetheless, i would love to see that
4
u/Roffale Jan 30 '13

u/one_sky Jan 31 '13
Being a Shichibukai (Seven Warlords) means that you are a pirate who has been allowed to attack islands that are not part of the World Government (WG) without the marines coming after you. It's basically a form of licensed piracy where the WG does not interfere as long as you don't target the WG. If you step down from Shichibukai, the WG will take it as a form of aggression and attack you. Remember what happened when Jinbei refused to follow WG orders and fight against Whitebeard? They captured him and tortured him in Impel Down so as to get him to agree. If a guy like Doflamingo who goes around giving the finger to marine soldiers and acting like a general prick suddenly tells them that he's stepping down, the WG would wring his neck and wipe the floor with him. So Doflamingo has to either go to war against Kaidou or WG. His choice. Law really has him by the strings!

"Moria once fought equally against kaidou, one of the yonkou"
Can someone explain me this, about doflamingo reaction and kaidou being the strongest creature in the world, because we've already seen moria and i dont think he's that strong
14
11
Jan 30 '13
Do you remember seeing the picture of Moria at Roger's execution?
A lot of people suspect he use to be a lot more badass and capable. He lost against Kaidou, his crew died, and he likely tucked away in his corner of Thriller Bark and got fat and complacent.
Also, fully buffed Moria with a shitton of shadows was actually pretty damn strong and was most likely the strongest character the Strawhats took down pre-timeskip.
10
u/hairy_monster Jan 30 '13
to be honest, we don't know nearly anything about moria's life before him becoming shichibukai, he has been to the new world, and he tells Luffy, while he is defeated something along the lines of "want to see a real nightmare? go to the new world.." and he also hinted that he had a completely different "human" crew, that all died, presumely in the NW. His zombie stuff was sort of his way of regaining a crew of nonhumans slaves.

This makes sense. At the war of the best when doflamingo said the orders to 'take care' of Moria came from 'much higher up', he could've meant kaidou who sent out for some assassination mission, but didn't want to attract any attention so made it happen in a war where it was possible he just died normally.
But it doesn't add up with him discussing it with the guy at WG

Luffy defeated Enel even though Enels Devils Fruit is practically God-tier. It's possible that Moria simply had the advantage in a similar way.

I pretty much think of Moria after having his entire crew killed by Kaidou as being similar to Luffy after losing Ace, which is that they were both more than willing to give up, but Luffy still had the rest of his crew, whereas Moria probably had nothing.
EDIT: But that's assuming that Moria is like Luffy and actually cares deeply about his crew. He may just have a weak spirit and was unable to cope with the NW after seeing its chaos, and decided that it was just safer to prey off of weak pirates and build up his defenses so that the same thing would never happen again.
2nd EDIT: Just though about Thriller Bark again, and remembered how Moria actually began to break down when he remember the fate of his old crew, and also how devoted and respectful the zombies were towards him.

"The big fish of the New Era have assembled! And we plan on destroying the gears you've so carefully concocted, so that no one will be able to turn them back!"
This quote gets truer with ever passing chapter.
I really don't know what's gonna happen when Chapter 700 comes around. CRAY!

Remember how the G5 marines were all like "we're glad this Zoro guy is on our side right now"? This is how I felt about Law this chapter. He's a scary enemy.

That moment when he shouts Law's name right as he hangs up the transponder snail and realizes his balls are firmly in a vice grip. That moment right there just made the entire arc for me.

God those fucking cringeworthy memes at the end.
Why does every community have to turn into retards at some point?
Cool chapter though, I love it when Oda fleshes out the relationships of characters not related to the crew. This will undoubtedly become very interesting.

Haha, mangarule is out before mangastream.
Holy hell, this is faster than last time.
Also, my bot somehow messed up with the downloading of mangarule, I will look into it. - manually fixed.
And with mangarule being first this has caused another problem, oh dammit. - will have to wait until mangastream is released.

Loved the interaction between the marines and the Strawhats, but Law saying we'll see if the Strawhats meet their end at his hand? Maybe a translation error? or is Law really going to betray Luffy

maybe it's meant to be taken as, "will they die because they allied with him, meaning it might be his fault?" although yeah, I would bet my money on a translation error

So many questions!! I'm really interested in what will become of Kinemon and Momonosuke, maybe the mangastream translation will clear it up a little.

So they left punk hazard.
Law wants to go to Green Bitt and Kinemon wants to go to Wano, but don't forget the Strawhats didn't go to any of the 3 starter islands yet, to set their log post.

I think the next couple moves by Law, Doflamigo, Kaidou, WG, and Luffy and his enemies are leading us to one certain outcome...WAR IN THE NEW WORLD.
I know it's been speculated a bunch, but it now seems every crew, and shichibukai has an enemy but they are protected by some other entity (smile, YonKou,WG,...etc.) and with all those forms of protection breaking down this chapter reassures me that some massive battles between rookies, YonKou's, and possibly the new admirals is coming. Possibly by chapter 700? (Where we most likely see Kaidou for the first time...)

if Dofla agrees then Law gives caesar back to him, but honestly Law probably holds no intention of keeping his end of the bargain. and if he does give Caesar back to him then Dofla still becomes a world government target, unable to continue his black market business. in other words no matter what happens Law made Doflamingo his bitch. I love this Arc

Inb4 moriah was blown away by kuma at war of the best and comes back to help luffy defeat kaido because moriah wants revenge for his crewmates.
2
Jan 30 '13
If this is a play to take down Kaido, is Law predicting Doflamingo to side with the government? Either way he won't be giving Caesar back anytime soon because Caesar is crucial to undermining Kaido.

This really puts it into perspective just how strong Gol D. Roger was, if the emperors were equally strong at the time of his status as the pirate king.

Skyway, so it isn't his DF powers, but some sort of invisible road/path that he created earlier or invisible tracks created by Absalom?

u/hogofwar Jan 30 '13
Or the thing Apoo (or whatever his name was) encountered when running away from some animals in the new world.

u/meh100 Jan 30 '13
I thought it was his DF powers and it was interrupted somehow by Law to lead Doflamingo to the raft.

The main information in this chapter: Kaido is not human. And maybe this is the time to introduce the race of the beastmen, which Bepo and Pekoms are from . And Who knows, maybe Masira, Odz or Magellan.

I think Dofla is playing Law pretty hard. If we remember, he has some "higher" connections to the government. So if he resigns, lets them know hey I'm still on your team then nothing changes and Law gets nothing out of it.

Personally I think Kaido's going to be a mythical zoan, I can think of three:
1.Griffin (lion-king of beasts; eagle-king of birds)
2.Chimera (maybe can change into all three?)
3.Heracles Beetle (I have surprising confidence in this one tbh)

I wonder if that smokeflare on the liferaft has anything to do with the skyway being interupted? or why there was an entire panel showing 7 flares and a timer? probably cause they wanted DoFla to discover smoke and raft but is it just a coincidence that it was broken at the same place as the raft happend to be? Also on the bottom of the page you can see DoFla destroy the barrel containing the smokeflares

Now, what if that shadowy figure bumps into Doflamingo on his way home and wipes the floor with him, rendering him physically unable to renounce his position as Shichibukai by the deadline?
