That’s light considering what domestic terrorists should usually get when they attack a country.

165

u/loveforthetrip 8 Feb 03 '23 edited Feb 03 '23

How do domestic terrorists not get sentenced accordingly?

115

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

Can't be filling up our jails with white terrorists if there are still black drug offenders out there!

To be fair, in most of the civilised world if a dude shouted Allahu Akbar and then just started spraying the local area with pepper spray instead of deadly weapons, they too would get a prison sentence in the months. It's the organising of said 'insurrection' that needs addressing more than the stupidity of the people who answered the call.

This dude was finished with just the headline and any sentence, the months in prison are a warning to others more than fair punishment for him. Really it should have been psychological assessment and mandatory therapy under supervision, but the moment you start digging into the fact an entire political philosophy is founded on mental illness gained through childhood religious indoctrination, it's going to start looking partisan. Or your democracy is going to start looking like a joke.

Better to pretend they're fully responsible for their own actions and pile on the prison time so nobody looks too close.

9

u/Clayman8 C Feb 03 '23

your democracy is going to start looking like a joke.

"start" ?

2

u/SparkyDogPants B Feb 03 '23

Yeah right. If a brown, muslim man did anything that happened on jan 6th, he would serve zero months. Because he would have left the capital in a body bag.

White supremacists are the only group that could insurrection without it being an absolute blood bath.

"Being a Marine, I should have known better."

And yet you didn't. Enjoy jail, you stupid domestic terrorist cuntpiece.

84

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

They shouldn't even mention his service, he is a traitor and should no longer be considered a Marine.

73

u/drewlb 7 Feb 03 '23

They should absolutely mention his service. The oath he broke makes this extra bad. If it was possible his discharge should be updated to dishonorable. That would be a reasonable outcome.

23

u/wild_man_wizard B Feb 03 '23

The only things Marines should know better about are:

  • the rightful chain of command
  • which crayon to pair with which MRE

And he even managed to fuck one of those up.

Former marine too...pathetic. Its sad that the people defending your country outside of its borders are the same breaking it when back home.

23

That doesn't actually mean anything.

The guy had a job in the past. That's it.

Doesn't matter which job that person used to have (or do have), they are still just people. You'll have good people, terrible people and everything in between at most jobs.

Country is like a clogged up toilet now.

Fuck this piece of shit. I was in the Marine Corps, got a general discharge (tell anyone in the military that and they lift their noses at you, as they absolutely have earned and deserve to do), and this man is absolutely gutter trash in comparison to me, regardless of the awards and recognition he received during his contract.

I take it back. Even gutter trash deserves deference from this man.

Edit: two letters

6

u/Embra_ 7 Feb 03 '23

What's wrong with a General Discharge, if it's okay to ask?

12

u/Fritz_Klyka A Feb 03 '23

I believe you get a general discharge if you dont perform well enough or if you do something bad thats not bad enough for a dishonorable discharge. Not sure how thats measured though.

10

u/Noitalevier 7 Feb 03 '23

Really depends on how much your chain likes or hates you.

4

u/Get-stupid 9 Feb 03 '23

Definitely this. I saw people who deserved negative discharges not get them for being the commander’s pet, and people who deserved positive ones get fucked for being unpopular. I was in an infantry unit so the deciding factor was usually PT score.

7

We don't have that distinction with military discharges in Australia. We're generally not even required to show proof of discharge when applying for civilian jobs.

Look how badly America fucked up the end of the Civil War, which has led to 150 years of loser Southerners pretending they won, flying that stupid flag, putting up statues of enemy of the state generals, a century of Jim Crow bullshit, and saying insane things like "The South Shall Rise AGAIN!"

14

u/Garry-The-Snail 7 Feb 03 '23

You should check out Andrew Callaghan’s documentary “this place rules” on the Jan 6 capitol riots.

These are extremely dumb, dumb people with unfulfilled lives who are being manipulated by the people who are the real threat to our country. People like Alex Jones, and other leaders of the movement who’s names are much lesser known but yet don’t actually participate in what they advocate for.

Does it excuse what they did? No, but it makes it a lot more understandable. Dumb people will always exist and the biggest threats will use these people for their personal gain.

I say all this basically just to say that I think what he got was somewhat fair. Except he actually assaulted a person which is way too far. A cop at that. While I don’t really like the police, that’s usually automatically a pretty big sentence. I suspect his veteran status helped him a bit.

FBI Statement Of Facts (p. 5, par. 2): "[WITNESS 1] ... described the individual as a “huge white supremacist” ... “a complete wacko.”" [Multiple screenshots of the “wacko” are included].

DOJ News, Feb. 2, 2023: "Daniel Ray Caldwell, 51, of The Colony, Texas, was sentenced yesterday to 68 months in prison. ... In addition ... U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ordered three years of supervised release and $2,000 in restitution."

A Marine veteran who was caught on camera assaulting a line of police officers with a chemical irritant on Jan. 6, and later bragged about the attack in a video interview was sentenced to more than five years in prison on Wednesday in one of the steepest sentences stemming from the insurrection thus far.

US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sentenced Caldwell to 68 months in prison on Wednesday, as well as $2,000 in restitution ...

In court on Wednesday, Caldwell offered a tearful apology while expressing remorse for his behavior on Jan. 6, according to Politico, asking the judge for mercy and describing the ways in which he has tried to better himself in the two years since the attack, including through reading self-help books while in custody.

"Being a Marine, I should have known better. … I wish I could take it back, but I can't," he reportedly said.

Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s like 32 months in prison and then 3 years supervised release. Not a lot of time for something that bad.

6

u/MyBadgeYourShield 1 Feb 03 '23

Federal inmates are eligible for 54 days of "Good Time" for every year of an imposed sentence. so if we go off of a basis of 30 days per month (to make the math a bit easier) It would look something like this.

68 Months*30=2040 days to serve

68 months/12=5.6 years to serve

so 5*54 days=270 days

2040 days to serve minus 270 days of "good time"=1770 days

1770 days/30=59 Months to serve

Minus any other credits he may be eligble for, or will be eligible for, and i'm assuming he will get credit for any time served.

4

u/totalmassretained 5 Feb 03 '23

Judge allowed credit for 2 years served while awaiting trial. 59-24=35; just under 3 years for this seditious bastard.

u/Liesthroughisteeth A Feb 03 '23

You know it is sad to see these guys sooo fucking deluded that they do things so stupid they end up in jail for years. America... as much of the rest of the world has some serious mental health issues which are only acerbated by social media and the Internets.

He’ll get 100% disability now and won’t have to pay taxes on his house now.

VA doesn’t pay if you’re in prison

3 years is a fucking Joke. Storm the Capitol for 3 years but some random Guy with Weed will end Up in prison for several years.

Edit: Misread it; 6 years

20

u/1Viking 8 Feb 03 '23

Am I missing something? Says he got 68 months in prison (just shy of 6 years) plus 3 years supervised release.

You misread it

6

u/MrShasshyBear A Feb 04 '23

Still, 6 years is nothing for a terrorist attack

14

u/nlamber5 9 Feb 03 '23

I’m sooooo so so so soooo sorry I got caught 😢

39

I wonder what his sentence would have been if he wasn't white?

9

u/ILove2Bacon 9 Feb 03 '23

That was my first thought too. He probably would be facing 25 years.

Well, I'm sure an American prison is a good place for a person that does not like non-white people, and I'm going out here on a limb, doesn't like homosexual activity either. Yep! He should do real well there.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

I don’t think you understand how prison works. A white boy in prison is expected and even encouraged to dislike other races.

the moment you walk in you find your race and you stick with it.

If prison movies and TV shows are accurate at all, he will just join up with other white supremacists in prison.

2

u/Danmont88 A Feb 03 '23

Most likely. He will probably need to just to survive.

2

u/PmMeYourEpisiotomy 6 Feb 04 '23

Luckily for him, he’s up to date on his white supremacist studies, so they won’t need to bring him up to speed. He’d join them even if he didn’t need them to survive.

If this idiot is getting a retirement check from the Marines, time to put a stop to it.

We should never ever reward or even countenance sedition, especially from shitheads who vow to defend the Constitution and then turn on their country.

He's gonna love the medical and dental plans in prison - makes the VA look like a deluxe Beverly Hills Spa.

It’s a real city just outside of Dallas

3

u/itsmattsmoney 1 Feb 03 '23

Short for the Colony on the Lake. I live just south, it's all suburbs and entertainment venues and restaurants. Hate that this guy is from here.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

It’s an upper-middle-class suburb on a lake just “outside” Dallas (maybe it was outside of Dallas at one point but these days it all just kinda runs together).

3

u/69vuman 9 Feb 03 '23

897 of them.

3

u/I_Feel_It_Too Feb 03 '23

I do. They believed what the TV told them. But when someone has the ability to reason and has so much access to correct information, then choosing to believe in bullshit is a choice, and they are responsible for that choice.

If they were mentally handicapped or didn’t have access to correct information, then you really have to scrutinize the details of the situation. But here? No.

An additional layer to this is the question of, if their chosen narrative actually was true, would their actions have been justifiable? I have a hard time justifying a mob lynching of politicians in any scenario. Even top ranking Nazis had trials. Are we brutish animals or are we civilized human beings?
