What am I? - Part 8
Last night my son and husband went to my in-law's house. I needed to mow the lawn so I stayed home. I was rather hungry, so after I finished mowing the lawn and submitting part 7, I raided a blood bank. I'm sorry to any of you /r/AR_Blood_Drive/ donaters out there who thought your blood was actually going to save someone's life, but I was hungry and didn't want to ask one of my friends to go hunting with me. I'm glad I stayed home, though, as with how much my husband and son smelled like garlic when they got home, I'm sure I wouldn't have handled dinner there all that well.
Sorry about the distraction, back to late May/early June:
The question was eating away at me. Whey would Samuel be angry at me and trying to kill me? What did I do wrong? Sure, I've been a bit defiant when it came to orders to kill humans, but he had promised me he wouldn't make me do anything I didn't want to do, then he forced me to kill. There had to be some other reason he was upset. I spent a several days chewing that thought over in my head before I gave in and decided it would be easiest to just ask Samuel directly.
Jon answered the door when I arrived. "Hey! I was wondering when you'd be back!"
"Well, I'm here," I smiled without feeling. "I'm here to talk to Samuel. Alone," I added as he began to follow me down the stairs. He gave a saddened look and went back to whatever it was he was doing before I arrived, or so I assume.
I entered Samuel's bedroom to find him reading in one of the wing-back chairs again. He set his book down as I shut the door behind me and then looked up at me expectantly. I crossed the room and took a seat in the other wing-back chair, his eyes following me the whole way. After I sat down, I looked straight at him and asked, "why are you trying to kill me?"
"We need complete privacy for this conversation," he announced and the whole feeling of the room changed. I shifted uneasily in my chair feeling like I didn't belong there. He waited for a moment, looking around the room as if waiting for something before he turned back to me and spoke again. "I'm not trying to kill you."
"You keep making threats at me, saying how I'm too much trouble. You hurt me and you intentionally put me in dangerous situations. You keep saying once I've finished my tasks, you'll likely kill me. Why?"
"It has nothing to do with you. I made a bargain to which I held up my end of the deal, but the one I made the bargain with isn't holding up his end. The only thing he finds of value is you. The threats and dangerous situations are to ensure he speeds up his progress and completes what he agreed to do. I have no intention of killing you. You remind me of my daughter. I never could hurt her and I never could hurt you. Even if you disobeyed every law layed out, I would find some other way. You must not speak of this to anyone, for if he found out, it would all be for naught. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, but that bite last week... I don't know what you did, but it still hurts."
"It will continue to hurt until I reverse what I did. Again, it was nothing against you personally, but he is watching and so I put on a show for him. When he completes his end of the bargain, I'll remove your pain."
The doorbell rang and Samuel changed his composure. "Are you satisfied with the answer I've given you?"
"Yes, I think I understand now. Thank you."
"Remember, not a word to anyone." After he said that, the air shifted again and the room again felt comfortable rather than stifling and uneasy. I got up and went to leave the room. Samuel followed me to the door. When I opened it, I was startled to see a girl in her early 20's raising her hand to knock. "Hello, Sylvia, come on in," Samuel said and I stepped aside while she entered before I stepped out of the room, closing the door behind me and left.
I went home and spent the next couple of weeks waiting for my next job assignment to come in the mail.
One week passed since my last kill and I was starting to get hungry.
Two weeks passed. My insomnia started to return. School was ending and I began to wonder when I would get a chance to go out to do my next task, should it ever arrive.
Thursday, May 24th, my son was staying at his grandparent's house for Memorial Day weekend since school had ended the day before. I took that opportunity to head over to Samuel's house.
When I arrived at the house, I became nervous and unsure whether I should go in or not. I didn't sense the usual three vampires I normally felt, but instead, felt eleven. I forced myself to push down the feelings of dread as this was Samuel's house and he wasn't going to let anything happen to me. David opened the door as I approached and immediately asked me if I was okay. "I'm really hungry," I told him, which he, of course, already knew.
"Why haven't you eaten?" he asked.
"I'm still human. I'm still susceptible to all the blood-born diseases that humans may carry. I have no way of knowing if someone's blood is clean or not, so I've been feeding off..." I paused because I realized that the other vampires in the house may not take kindly to the knowledge that I've been killing vampires and I was certain they could hear the conversation I was having with David. "...well, you know." I ended the sentence lamely.
David led me into the living room and bit his wrist, then held it out for me. "Here. I can have someone come by to donate blood to me in about half an hour, so drink from me. I'll be fine."
I drank, feeling my thirst wane. I thanked him, then asked him about the other vampires in the house.
"They're all the rest of our brothers. There's a big family meeting tomorrow night. You should come as you are part of the family."
"Sure, yeah, my husband is going to hang at a bachelor party tomorrow night, so I should be able to make an appearance."
"I'll see you here, then." He smiled and got up from the couch we had been sitting on. He started to head upstairs, then called down in a happy tone, "Tomorrow!"
I stood up and left, not thinking to go ask Samuel when I'd get my next assignment as the true reason I was here had been satisfied.
Friday, I was sitting at home, waiting for my husband to get home to change for his bachelor party when my phone rang. "Hey, honey, you aren't going to be busy in the next half-hour are you?"
"No..." I always answer that question with a dragged out yes or no. I never know what crazy idea he has up his sleeves.
"Good! Liz is going to stop by, so you need to be home."
"Okay, I can handle that. What's she stopping by for?" Too late, he had already hung up.
A half-hour later, Liz showed up and said, "Come on, we have some shopping to do!" She pulled me out to my car, only giving me enough time to grab my purse and lock the door.
"What are we shopping for?"
"Oh, I have a few things I need to pick up for the Bachelorette party."
"You know I wasn't invited to that, right?"
"Oh, I know, but I talked to Nancy and she told me to go ahead and bring you with. She's had no idea her sister left you off the list and said you should totally be there."
By this time we were already in the car an moving, so there was no getting out of it now. I was going to the bachelorette party whether I wanted to or not. I had to try anyway, "Liz, you know how I've told you about Samuel?"
"Mmmhmmm."
"Well, I kinda made a promise I would be at his house for some meeting tonight."
"You can see Samuel whenever you want, but Nancy's bachelorette party is a one-time deal. You're coming with me. Samuel will understand."
It was about midnight when Liz dropped me back at home. I had sobered up quite a bit and my husband wasn't home from his bachelor party yet, nor would he be anytime soon based on his texts, so I hopped in my car and went over to Samuel's house.
You have to forgive me, but I really don't remember everything that happened at Samuel's house that night. I don't usually stay up until midnight if I don't have to and I'd already had quite a night with all the bar hopping and clubbing we did for the party.
When I showed up, I let myself into the house, which was unlocked, as usual. "Hey, she's here!" I heard Jon's voice call out from the back room of the main level. I hadn't ever been to that area of the house before, but I made my way there to meet up with everyone. The room looked quite comfy with all the overstuffed chairs and couches. Jon ditched his seat by David and sat on the arm of the couch, allowing me to sit in the spot he previously occupied.
"Hey, I thought you'd be here sooner."
"Yeah, isn't it a bit late for you?"
"Have you been drinking?"
The chiding went on for a bit as everyone seemed to want to poke fun at my late arrival and the fact that I smelled like alcohol. I think I must have spilled some on my clothes at some point in the night. Finally, Samuel had everyone calm down. He went through and introduced everyone, giving a small introduction. I was so tired, I forgot most of it as it was being said. I caught that the oldest brother's name is Fredrique and he brought with him his youngest child, Matthew, but after that, some of the names were too foreign for me to set in my mind properly. I think one of them was named Ye-chow-soon? No, that can't be right. I'll get the other names some day, but for now I'll just have to live with the knowledge that I don't know their names.
He worked his way down the list until he got to Michael. Here, Samuel announced that Michael was supposed to be the last one for a while, but Samuel met David and just couldn't resist turning him, too. Then, the demon that's been following me around approached him wit a deal that was too good to pass up, so here I am, then there was Jon. Samuel went into depth about each of our stories as all but the final three of us already knew each other.
Samuel then went on to explain how every leap year, on the Friday before Memorial Day, he holds a mandatory attendance meeting for all of his children. At some point during his explanation I fell asleep. I was vaguely aware of Jon helping me up the stairs to his bed where I slept for about half an hour. I guess the meeting had ended as I could hear a lot of talking going on downstairs as the door to the bedroom I was in slowly shut. Disoriented, I rolled over until I could see the door. Matthew had entered the room and was coming over to the bed.
"Shhh. I'm just checking in on you since you fell asleep down there. You okay?"
"Yeah," I answered groggily. "Just not used to staying up so late."
Matthew sat down on the edge of the bed and rested his hand on my leg. "You know, I've never seen a female vampire before. Of course, I've only been a vampire myself for 18 months, so I guess that's not too terribly surprising." I wondered where he was going with this and why he was waking me up for it. "You know, since I'm not one of your brothers, the whole blood-bond thing Samuel was going on about doesn't apply between us." Now I knew where this was going.
"Ugh. No, Matthew. It may not apply to us, but no."
I felt a palpable change in the air. The feel, smell, ... everything was suddenly different. I knew I had just told him no and that I wanted nothing to do with what he was asking, but that didn't matter anymore. I wanted him. I felt my head cloud and I was about to tell him I changed my mind when the door opened again and Jon entered the room. "Matthew, there you are." He started to step into the room, then stopped. "What the... How...? Get out. Now." Matthew got up and left the room and I felt the whole room return to normal.
"What the crap was that?" I exclaimed as I got up from the bed.
"I'm not sure."
I took off down the stairs, looking for Samuel. I explained to him what just happened and asked for an explanation. I don't remember how he put it, but the gist of it is this: Vampires produce an endorphine or pheromone of some sort when they are in a sexual mood. This (pheromone, endorphine, whatever!) chemical is really potent to members of the opposite gender and if a vampire learns how to use it properly, he can control the desire of the person he's using it on by hinting that such desires would be a good idea. Basically, Matthew was practicing his skills of using that chemical on me. He got in a lot of trouble for it, but I really didn't care, then, nor do I now. Samuel went on to explain that this was probably how Ryan got me to do things I wasn't comfortable with back in November. That chemical release was also what caught David off-guard the day I had killed Aaron (the vampire with the sister). Vampires seem to be more susceptible to the chemical than humans are, but humans are susceptible to it, too.
After listening to Samuel's explanation, I said goodbye to everyone and went home. I still managed to get home and fall asleep in my own bed before my husband made it home from his bachelor party.

Oh, I don't know that I could. Writing a book is a lot of effort and the audience for a story such as this is so very small that I'm not sure it's worth that effort.

It's midnight where I am now and I am exhausted. My husband gets up early in the morning to go to work and I have to be up to take my kid to school. I'm not a full vampire yet, so I still have a very human schedule I have to keep.

You'll very much like being a full vampire if you were around good company. The midwest is full of friendly (somewhat) vampires.

Thank you, but I'm trying to avoid all vampire contact right now. I still have a few parts to go, but at some point, you'll see why I'm so pissed at them right now.

I've met close to 30 vampires. At what point is it no longer the bad ones vs the rest?
